TROY BROWN JR.
TROY BROWN JR. 2018 NBA Draft Scouting Report
WEIGHT: 210 POUNDS
POSITION: SHOOTING GUARD/SMALL FORWARD
PROJECTED DRAFT POSITION: MID FIRST ROUND (POTENTIAL BACK END OF THE LOTTERY SELECTION)
Oregon lost a ton of talent off last year’s Final 4 team. Gone are stars Dillon Brooks, Jordan Bell, and Tyler Dorsey. All 3 are making a living in the NBA. Troy Brown Jr. will be joining them next year in the league. The freshman has been playing very well as the Ducks have been relying on the former 5-star recruit. It looks like the jack of all trades freshman is improving on a daily basis.
Troy Brown Jr. is a joy to watch. He doesn’t have one particular elite skill. However, he does everything well. He can handle the ball, pass, defend, rebound, and get to the basket. He is Oregon’s best NBA prospect for this season. Brown Jr. is a big time athlete. The Las Vegas native has been a perfect fit in head coach Dana Altman’s high octane system. He can create for himself and attacks the basket ferociously. His first step is quicker than we first thought. He displays a good mid-range game and has a pretty fade-away jumper that is tough to stop because of his size. The talented wing player is averaging just under 7 rebounds per game. This is another indicator of his impact on the game and in the box score. He always seems to be a part of the play.
Brown needs to improve upon his shooting range. While very good when in attack mode, he has an inconsistent outside shot. He needs to improve his range as he is only shooting 30% from the 3-point line. He shows nice shooting mechanics although he can become inconsistent in repeating his form from what he have seen. This is common in young players and will improve with hard work and practice. Getting into the weight room and adding strength is going to be important as he goes forward with his professional career.
We really like how the freshman gets after it on the defensive end. He seems to take pride in locking down opposing players. He can guard multiple positions as this is a very important trait to have at the NBA level. Brown Jr. has the foot speed and lateral quickness to guard smaller players. He also has the size to guard bigger players.
Outside shooting and strength are the 2 main weaknesses in his otherwise very solid all-around game. We like Brown Jr.’s NBA future. Once he attains a consistent jumper, we see him as a future, solid NBA starter. With his ability to defend multiple positions to go along with his passing and ball-handling, he should carve out a very nice NBA career. He is the type of player that can fit on any NBA roster because of his ability to do so many things at an above average level.
