Trevon Duval 2018 NBA Draft Scouting Report
WEIGHT: 190 POUNDS
POSITION: POINT GUARD
PROJECTED DRAFT POSITION: LATE LOTTERY TO PICK 20 (MUST SHOW IN INDIVIDUAL WORKOUTS THAT SHOOTING HAS IMPROVED)
Trevon Duval was known among college scouts by the time he was in 9th grade. Known for the last 4 years as one of the top point guards in his class, the 6’3″ lead guard was the number 1 rated PG in the class of 2017, narrowly edging out Alabama star freshman Collin Sexton.
Part of Duke’s 2017 star studded recruiting class, the 190-pounder was given the keys to run the show by head coach Mike Krzyzewski. Throughout the first month of the season, the results have been very promising. He is currently averaging 12.3pts, 2.1reb, and 6.7ast per game as the Blue Devils have gotten off to an 11-1 start.
While evaluating the former 5-star recruit, his athleticism jumps out on tape. Trevon Duval possesses elite athletic ability and has the perfect NBA point guard body. Duke has many scoring options on their roster and Duval has taken advantage of this. He gets the ball to teammates in position where they can score. His ball-handling and passing ability as a whole are outstanding. He is an absolute blur in the open court as we believe he is the fastest player in college basketball. There are instances where he is simply a one man fast break.
We would like to see Duval start the offense a little sooner as at times he can be a ball stopper. As he gains more experience he should improve in this area. He tries to do to much at times, which leads to careless turnovers. Again, this is an area that can be improved with natural player progression and game experience.
Duke point guards are known for putting tremendous pressure on the basketball. Duval shows the ability in time to become a premier on ball defender. It will take some time as he has lapses defensively, but all the tools are there.
Trevon Duval lit up scoreboards at the high school level. Nearly unguardable one on one, he attacks the basket with authority. The strength to finish around the rim and with contact are attributes he already displays.
There aren’t many weaknesses in the floor general’s game. The most glaring is his shooting. Inconsistent mechanics is the most glaring hole in his overall game. Duval struggles with the 3-point shot. Improvement in his mechanics and long-range shooting is imperative from now until individual draft workouts. His foul shooting percentage is low for a point guard. Shooting is one skill that can be improved upon with hard-work. Duval has a strong work ethic, which leads us to believe that his shooting will improve and become more consistent.
It is shaping up to be a 2 man race between Duval and Collin Sexton for being the first point guard selected in the 2018 NBA Draft. Both will be lottery picks. If Trevon Duval ever becomes a reliable outside shooter, we believe his potential is extremely high. All the other attributes are there for the Duke star to become a high level NBA starting PG. His ceiling is that of an NBA All-Star.
