RODIONS KURUCS 2018 NBA DRAFT SCOUTING REPORT
COLLEGE: NO COLLEGE- PLAYING FOR BARCELONA 2
WEIGHT: 190 POUNDS
POSITION: SMALL FORWARD
CLASS: NO CLASS- DOESN’T ATTEND COLLEGE
PROJECTED DRAFT POSITION: LATE FIRST TO EARLY SECOND ROUND
Rodions Kurucs thought long and hard about entering the 2017 NBA Draft. The youngster instead returned to play for Barcelona 2. Kurucs was projected as a late first round pick last year. At this point it seems like he might get picked around the same area. Since the small forward plays overseas, the only evaluation we have on him is from watching film. Playing against grown men on a nightly basis will have him prepared more than most players coming straight out of college.
Rodions Kurucs shows some attributes that looks like they will translate to the NBA game. At 6’9″, he sports great size for the small forward position and is a better athlete than he is given credit for. Kurucs seems to always be in constant motion. He moves very well without the ball. The 19-year old shows range out to the NBA 3-point line and has solid shooting fundamentals. He shows the ability to attack the rim and make plays for him and teammates. He needs to improve upon his ball-handling ability for the next level or he will have difficulty getting his own shot, in our opinion. His rebounding should improve as he gets bigger and stronger.
We were surprised with his passing ability. Kurucs has a little bit of flair in his game and can make difficult passes. He see the court very well, in our opinion. However, this can lead to careless turnovers. He is going to need to hit the weight room and gain another 15 pounds of muscle. He is light in the lower body. Getting stronger, improving his ball-handling, and improving on his outside shot are 3 things he needs to work on the most. A question we have is how well will he be able to defend one on one at the NBA level. Small forwards are elite athletes at the NBA level.
Rodions Kurucs is a player that NBA scouts have known about for the past few years. Because of his ability to move without the ball very well and play within himself, he would be a great fit for a team like the Spurs. Kurucs would be a very good college player if he was playing in the states. We project him in a few years as a player who can do a little it of everything on the court at an average to above average level. Once he starts getting into the weight room, we look for him to really come into his own. He is a player that we believe can be a useful rotational player for an NBA team in 2-3 years.
SNIPPETS OF RODIONS KURUCS 2017 NBA DRAFT SCOUTING REPORT
“The 6’8″ small forward has prototypical size for the position. If he played division 1 basketball in the states, we believe he would have a major impact. The 19-year old’s main strength lies in his ability to put the ball in the basket. He has shown us the ability to score in a multitude of ways.”
“Kurocs can attack the basket and finish through contact, which is impressive as he is playing against much older players. He can hit the mid-range jumper with consistency and shows range out to the 3-point line. He will need to keep improving on his consistency from long-range.”
