Mikal Bridges 2018 NBA Draft Scouting Report
WEIGHT: 200 POUNDS
POSITION: SMALL FORWARD
PROJECTED DRAFT POSITION: LATE LOTTERY TO MID TEENS
Mikal Bridges has continually improved each season. During his first 2 years at Villanova, the junior provided good defense and not much offense. It looks like the hard-work he put into his offensive game during the summer has paid off. The small forward has turned into one of the best 2-way players in college basketball.
With the loss of All-American Josh Hart to the NBA, head coach Jay Wright needed Bridges to replace some of the offense which Hart provided. He has done that and more. During Nova’s perfect 8-0 start to the season, the Malvern, PA native is averaging 17.9pts, 6.3reb, and 1.9ast. Along with PG Jalen Brunson, the Wildcats have 2 players capable of leading the team to a deep NCAA tournament run.
The 6’7″, 200 pounder is a highly athletic and bouncy wing player. He is at his best when playing in transition as he is excellent when in attack mode. The range on his jump-shot has improved to where he now has range out to the 3-point line. Although he is still inconsistent in this area, the improvements are noticeable and provides NBA scouts hope that it will continue to improve. Bridges has tightened up his shooting fundamentals, which is a major reason why his scoring average is way up from last season. In tight end of game situations he welcomes having the ball as he shoots free throws at a high percentage. He needs to continue to tighten his handle for the next level. He is a solid passer and his play-making ability should improve once he becomes a more adept ball-handler.
While he has made big strides in his offensive game, Bridges calling card in the NBA will most likely be his ability to defend multiple positions. We consider him an elite defender. With his athletic ability and 7’0″ wingspan, the junior can guard 3-4 positions, which is an invaluable commodity to a team. He thrives at getting into passing lanes for steals and is an aggressive shot-blocker for a small forward.
Mikal Bridges has really grown on us after evaluating his play from last year and during this season. He is playing with an extreme amount of confidence. In our opinion, he is only going to keep improving as he has not yet come close to fulfilling his potential as a player. This is what has NBA scouts very intrigued about him. Bridges is known as a team player with a high basketball IQ. We project him to eventually be a very solid “3 and D” player at the next level. Bridges will be a 1st round draft pick if he declares for the 2018 NBA Draft. He has a chance to be a late lottery selection if he keeps improving at the rate he is currently playing at.
