SCOUTING REPORT

Marvin Bagley was the number 1 rated player in the class of 2018. He made the decision to graduate from high school early. He committed to Duke and made head coach Mike Krzyzewski one happy man. Bagley has simply been the best player in college basketball throughout the first month of the 2017-18 season.

The 18-year old can do everything on the basketball court. He runs the court like a guard. There is no stopping the 6’11” PF/C around the basket. Bagley shows a unique ability to score with both hands. The potential is there for the freshmen sensation to become an eventual stretch-4 at the NBA level. While his outside shot has room for improvement, his fundamentals are sound. As he continues to expand his outside game he will just become an even more tougher cover. Through the first 12 games of the season, he is averaging 21.3pts, 11.3reb, and 1.5ast per game.

Bagley is always in motion on the offensive end. He excels at scoring while on the move. Opposing big-men simply can’t keep up with him. He can put the ball on the floor and attack the basket. This is unusual for 6’11” players. Once Bagley attains a consistent outside shot, he will be a force at the NBA level.

While a force on the offensive end, his defensive potential is just as good. One of the best rebounders in college basketball, his agility and lateral quickness allows him to get to loose balls that other players can’t. With a 7’0″ wingspan, if the ball is in his vicinity he will get it. Bagley is an average shot-blocker, perhaps one of the few areas in which he can improve in.

Marvin Bagley III is the most impressive 18-year old basketball player that we have evaluated. The sky is the limit for the Duke freshmen. As he continues to mature and improve, he shows the talent to be an NBA franchise type of player. 6’11” players with his overall talent are rare to find. The lefty shooting Bagley reminds us of former NBA All-Star Chris Bosh. Barring injury he can eventually become a better version of Bosh. Bagley is our favorite to become the number 1 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.

  1. Imo Bagley is a generational type of prospect. He has very few holes in his game and reminds me of a stretch version of Kevin Garnett

    1. Hi Chase,
I agree with you. Remember, he should only be a senior in high school. He graduated early. His potential is through the roof. When he gets a consistent jumper, he will be a phenomenal NBA player.

  2. It’s scary how good of a perimeter defender he his for his size. He needs to work on scoring with both hands in the low post, and he needs to definitely improve his FT shooting. If he continues to develop his offensive & defensive game, with the addition of getting stronger so he can adjust to the physicality (because he is slim-ish), he can be a monster at the next level.

    1. Hi,
You make some great arguments. Remember, Bagkley should only be a senior in high school as he reclassified. I believe he can be a future All-Star. Reminds me a lot of a young Chris Bosh. Besides his overall talent, his IQ for the game is very high. Playing for Duke this year has made him improve in every little nuance in the game. He should be a top 4 pick in the draft.
