Landry Shamet is another perfect example of how Gregg Marshall runs the Wichita State Shockers Basketball program. The head coach has brought the Shockers to national prominence has recruited under the radar players like Shamet during his entire career. After a very good freshman campaign, the point guard has risen his game to another level.
The Kansas City, MO native has the prototypical size for the lead guard position that NBA scouts like. Standing 6’4″, he sports above-average athleticism. While not an overly explosive athlete, the sophomore displays a very high basketball IQ for a young player.
He makes very good decisions with the basketball. He plays the game under control and the correct way. While watching Shamet on the floor, he shows complete control of the Shocker’s offense. Shamet has the unique ability to play at different speeds with the ball in his hands. The floor general for one of college basketball’s best teams puts the ball to where his teammate’s can make plays. The switch from SG to PG last year has worked out phenomenally for both himself and the team.
While being a good passer, the skill that will make Landry Shamet an NBA player is his shooting ability. One of the best scoring PG’s in the college game, the 190-pounder is a joy to watch on the offensive end. His size allows him to shoot over smaller guards. He has a beautiful mid-range pull-up jump-shot, which is rare to see at the collegiate level. The PG can shoot it from NBA 3-point range and he moves very well without the ball. When the game is on the line, the ball should be in his hands as he is a very good and clutch free-throw shooter. As he continues he natural maturation, we believe he can become a very efficient scorer at the next level.
Shamet still needs to develop in order to reach his full potential. Gaining strength and muscle will be needed in order for him to play a full NBA season. Getting stronger will benefit him while he attacks the basket at the offensive end. While he is a solid finisher at Wichita State, the NBA is a different game. The weight room will need to be his good friend all the way up to the 2018 NBA Draft in June.
A question that needs to be answered is how will Shamet guard at the next level. While he has the size to guard PG’s, does he have the required foot speed? It will be interesting to see if he can make himself into an above average defender for the next level.
Throughout the first month of the 2017-18 season, Landry Shamet has been simply outstanding. In our minds, he is one of the top 10 players in college basketball. He plays with a chip on his shoulder as he wasn’t considered a blue-chip high school recruit. He is making opposing coaches pay for it now. While the season and NBA Draft are months away, we consider him a definitive first round prospect. How high in the first round will ultimately depend on how much he progresses this season and how his NBA Draft workouts go. Shamet is a player who, in our opinion who can become a very good starting caliber NBA point guard in time.
