Hamidou Diallo 2018 NBA Draft Scouting Report
WEIGHT: 190 POUNDS
POSITION: SHOOTING GUARD
PROJECTED DRAFT POSITION: LATE LOTTERY TO PICK NUMBER 20 (CHANCE TO RISE)
Hamidou Diallo sat out last year after enrolling at Kentucky. Since he was 19-years old in high school, he could have entered the 2017 NBA Draft. He decided against it, which we believe was a very smart decision. The former high school star finally suited up for the Wildcats this year as the results have been very promising.
Diallo might be the most explosive player in college basketball. He made jaws drop at last year’s NBA Draft Combine when he unleashed a 44.5-inch vertical jump. This confirmed to NBA scouts that he has elite athletic ability. What NBA scouts wanted to see was him on the floor showcasing his overall skills. The first 11 games into this season, the Queens, New York native has shown glimpses of being a future first round pick.
While evaluating the 6’5″ shooting guard, we see a player who is dangerous when attacking the rim. This is when he is at his best. Diallo has a real quick first step, which enables him to blow past opposing defenders. The freshman’s NBA draft position hinges on how much his jump shot develops. He struggles from 3-point range (35%) and has inconsistent shooting mechanics. It is imperative that he gets into the gym everyday in the months leading up to the June Draft and improve his shooting. How well he shoots in individual workouts will go a long way to where he gets drafted. Teams will need to see improved mechanics.
The area where Hamidou Diallo can make an immediate impact at the NBA level is on the defensive end. The ability to become a premier defender is there. His footwork, athleticism, and lateral quickness are all elite. Kentucky head coach John Calipari stresses defense and the freshman has thrived playing man to man. Ball-handling and passing are 2 other areas where he needs to improve in. He is known as a hard worker who will put the time in to get better.
We personally really like the upside of Diallo. He isn’t a finished product by any means. Players with his athletic ability and defensive potential will always be scouted heavily. It all comes down to how much he improves shooting the basketball. If Diallo ever refines his shooting, he might just be one of the steals of the 2018 NBA Draft. He is a gamble worth taking.
SNIPPETS OF HAMIDOU DIALLO’S 2017 NBA DRAFT SCOUTING REPORT
“Hamidou Diallo has a very intriguing skill-set. We really like his potential as it is very high. He is nowhere near a finished product and that is fine by us. NBA teams mostly draft based on long-term potential and Diallo is a very talented basketball player. He made a very smart decision enrolling at Kentucky. While he never played in a game, he got to practice with one of the best teams in the country. He was also afforded the opportunity to get in the weight room and get bigger and stronger, which he has.”
