#21 RANKED PLAYER IN COUNTRY (CLASS OF 2016)
STAR RANKING: 4 STARS
WEIGHT: 220 POUNDS
AGE: 18 YEARS OLD
HIGH SCHOOL: BISHOP GORMAN IN NEVADA
CHOSE GONZAGA OVER: SAN DIEGO STATE, NEW MEXICO, AMONG OTHERS
NBA COMPARISON: KELLY OLYNYK/ FORMER GONZAGA PLAYER
PLAYER SUMMARY: Gonzaga Head Coach Mark Few has done one of the best coaching jobs in college basketball during his tenure at the Spokane, Washington school. With success comes the bonus of recruiting higher ranked players. The Zags and Few landed a player who reminds us very much of former Gonzaga star and current Boston Celtic, Kelly Olynyk.
Zach Collins is one of the top centers in the class of 2016 and will presumably fill the spot in the starting lineup for Domantas Sabonis, who is heading to the NBA. Collins played at the same high school as UNLV freshmen Stephen Zimmerman and Duke’s Chase Jeter. When we evaluated the center’s game, we saw a player who showed a nice shooting stroke. He has range that extends close to the 3-point line. In our opinion, he has perhaps the best shooting stroke for a center in the class of 2016.
He shows nice passing ability, reminiscence of Sabonis, although not at his level. We like the 18-year old’s ability to knock down a jump-hook with both hands. At 6’11”, he has very good athletic ability and from our evaluation, always seems to make the correct play, showing a high basketball IQ. He makes the correct and right play when it needs to be made, which is a trait that can’t be taught.
Collins is an above-average rebounder, although we believe he needs to be more physical. At this point in his development he plays more on the outside than down-low. He will need to continue developing his post-up game in order to maximize his potential. He currently weighs around 220 pounds. He will need to get in the weight room and add muscle.
In our opinion, Zach Collins is a work in progress who in time can be a really good college basketball player and perhaps play in the NBA. 6’11” basketball players who can shoot like him are a rare commodity. He reminds us of Sabonis and Olynyk as both of those 2 players had very good perimeter games. He is just scratching the surface of what type of player he can eventually be. We look for Collins to start for Gonzaga right away. Mark Few is excellent at developing players, especially big-men. This is good news for Zach Collins and his basketball future.
