PLAYER SUMMARY: Gabriel has rocketed up the recruiting rankings in the past 12 months. The Sudan born Gabriel is perhaps the most improved high school player in the country and will provide Kentucky with much needed front-court help.

The 18-year old Power Forward is a good athlete with a 7’1″ wingspan. The wingspan helps him on the defensive end where he is an excellent rebounder. He is also an excellent on-ball defender who plays with an extremely high motor. All of these attributes stand out when watching tape of him. Gabriel has a decent mid-range game at this point in his development. The ability to attack his defender off the dribble is there, although he needs to improve his ball-handling skills. He converts at an extremely high rate around the basket, although it remains to be seen how that will translate at the college level.

Gabriel needs to put on muscle to his 210 pound frame. The Kentucky strength program is highly regarded and this should help him. He is a very weak 3-point shooter, however I believe his game is more of a slashing, get to the rim style of game. I don’t believe he will be asked to play out on the perimeter regularly at Kentucky as they always have tremendous guard play.

Wenyen Gabriel is a very intriguing prospect. My opinion is that he is very raw but possesses good, not great potential. The biggest concern for me is that he must add muscle and weight to his frame as well as improving his shooting stroke. The rebounding will translate to the college level, however for him to maximize his potential, added muscle/weight, improved shooting and ball-handling is a necessity. He is a work in progress with the opportunity to be a very good player in time.
