PLAYER SUMMARY: I recently saw Omari Spellman play at a basketball tournament in New Jersey. The big-man will go to Villanova and give the Wildcats a low-post presence that they normally do not have. Jay Wright likes his 3-4 guards on the floor at one time, however he will surely welcome Spellman with open arms.
I was impressed with what I saw from Spellman. He is closer to 6’8″ than his listed 6’9″ height, however he is a true low-post player. He showed some nice post-moves and a little 12 foot jumper. He rebounded very well, using all of his 285 pound body. He has a nice array of offensive skills. He should help replace the loss of big-man Daniel Ochefu, who is a senior.
When I first saw Spellman, my first thought was that he needed to lose a little bit of weight. While athletic enough at the high school level, losing weight will help him become more mobile when going up against college players. I was impressed with Spellman as I believe he will have an immediate impact for Villanova next year. Once he gets into a real conditioning and weight training program at Villanova, he should be a real nice college player.
