STAR RANKING: 5 STARS
WEIGHT: 230 POUNDS
AGE: 17 YEARS OLD
POSITION: POWER FORWARD
HIGH SCHOOL: OAK HILL ACADEMY IN VIRGINIA
CHOSE DUKE OVER: NORTH CAROLINA, KENTUCKY, KANSAS
NBA COMPARISON: DERRICK FAVORS WITH A BETTER JUMP-SHOT
PLAYER SUMMARY: The number 2 overall prospect in the class of 2016 has missed his senior season with a torn ACL. He is expected to make a full recovery and be ready for next season.
There aren’t too many players at any level that have the athletic ability and speed that Giles possesses. At 6’9″, he is lightning quick and extremely explosive. He is ambidextrous around the basket and has a nice little jump-hook. He is probably the best offensive and defensive rebounder at the high school level. Giles has the potential to be an elite defender as he can guard multiple positions, which is rare for a player of his size.
At this point in his development, Giles doesn’t have a reliable jump-shot. In high school he gets most of his points around the basket. As he moves up to college and beyond the jump-shot must improve. He doesn’t have great ball-handling skills, although most 6’9″ power forwards don’t. His passing and free-throw shooting need to improve.
When watching Giles play, it is clear he has all the ingredients necessary to be a one and one college player with a chance to be an excellent professional. He has attributes that can’t be taught. He might possibly be the most talented Duke player Mike Krzyzewski has brought into Duke since Grant Hill many years ago. Harry Giles can be as good as he wants to be. He will be in the running for the first overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.
