PLAYER SUMMARY: The 2015-16 version of the Maryland Terrapins had an abundance of talent, however were plagued with inconsistency. A main problem was that star guard Melo Trimble didn’t replicate the success he had as a freshmen. Trimble moved from shooting guard to point guard with mixed results. It is safe to say that head coach Mark Turgeon needed to find a true lead guard in his 2016 recruiting class. Luckily for Turgeon and UM fans, he found and signed a good one in Anthony Cowan.

Anthony Cowan is only 5’10”, however he is one of the quickest point guards in the class of 2016. When reviewing his game films, we see a player who is lightning quick from baseline to baseline. He is a true point guard as he looks to get his teammates involved first before looking for his own shot. This is what Maryland was missing last season, as Trimble is more of a scoring point guard, and in our opinion more of a shooting guard trying to play PG.

The Washington, D.C. product can score, however. We saw Cowan hit the mid-range jump-shot with regularity and he shows range out to the 3-point line. Due to his speed, he is able to get into the lane whenever he wants and can get his shot off against bigger players as well.

It is imperative that Cowan gets into the weight room and build strength. The Big 10 conference is a very physical league and too hold up on a nightly basis he will need to get stronger.

Our overall opinion of Anthony Cowan is one where he has a chance to be a multi-year starter for Maryland. We firmly believe if he was on last year’s team, the Terrapins would have advanced further in the NCAA tournament. Point guard play was shaky for them. This is a big get for Mark Turgeon as he finally gets a true point guard and now Trimble can move back to the SG position, where he is more comfortable. We expect Cowan to have a nice career for the Terrapins.
