HIGH SCHOOL PLAYER PROFILES (ALTERIQUE GILBERT)

ALTERIQUE GILBERT

#36 RANKED PLAYER IN COUNTRY (CLASS OF 2016)

STAR RANKING: 4 STARS

HEIGHT: 6’0″

WEIGHT: 160 POUNDS

AGE: 18 YEARS OLD

POSITION: POINT GUARD

HIGH SCHOOL: MILLER GROVE HIGH SCHOOL IN GEORGIA

CHOSE CONNECTICUT OVER: ILLINOIS, LOUISVILE, SYRACUSE, AMONG MANY OTHERS

NBA COMPARISON:  SHABAZZ NAPIER/FORMER UCONN PLAYER

PLAYER SUMMARY: Head Coach Kevin Ollie won the national championship at Connecticut in 2014. The key to that team was point guard Shabazz Napier, who carried the Huskies on his back all the way to the title. Napier ended up being a first round draft pick the same year. Last season point guard play was erratic with Ollie clearly missing the leadership qualities and talent of Napier.

Ollie went out searching for a point guard and landed one in 4-star player Alterique Gilbert. The number 36th ranked player in the country will be handed the keys to the UCONN offense from the very first practice. The 6’0″ PG from Georgia is a very good athlete. We believe he is closer to 5’11” than 6’0″, however he dunks with ease, which shows what type of vertical jump he possesses.

Gilbert is an excellent ball-handler with nice court vision. We were very impressed with the way he oversees the court as he always seems to make the correct pass/play. He is a solid shooter at this point in his development with room to improve. He can score in bunches, however is streaky. His jump-shot should improve with repetitions. With his great ability to get into the lane it is very important he improves his shooting in order to keep opposing defenses honest.

His size might hurt him some at the college level, however his athletic ability and skills should make up for his lack of height. When watching film of the 18-year old it is clear he has the quickness and ability to start right right away at Connecticut. We see Gilbert as a player with the ability to score and be a play-maker, which is a difficult thing to do for a young player. He blends both attributes into his game nicely.

Alterique Gilbert is a very good, young, and talented point guard who is exactly the type of player Kevin Ollie needed. He reminds us of Shabazz Napier in the way he plays. There will be growing pains with starting as a freshmen, however the positives should outweigh the negatives. Gilbert has a chance to be a phenomenal college point guard and one of the better players in the AAC Conference sooner rather than later. Kevin Ollie needed a big-time point guard to run his system and he got one in Alterique Gilbert.
