#7 RANKED PLAYER IN COUNTRY (CLASS OF 2017)
STAR RANKING: 5 STARS
WEIGHT: 175 POUNDS
POSITION: SHOOTING GUARD/POINT GUARD
HIGH SCHOOL: PEBBLEBROOK HIGH SCHOOL IN GEORGIA
CHOSE ALABAMA OVER: ARIZONA, GEORGIA TECH, FLORIDA, NORTH CAROLINA STATE, AMONG MANY OTHERS
PLAYER SUMMARY: Collin Sexton has raised his stock more than any other player in high school over the past year. Through hard work he has made himself into a 5-star prospect and was part of Team USA (17U) this past summer, winning a gold medal. Alabama and head coach Avery Johnson are the lucky recipients as Sexton will be suiting up for the Crimson Tide next year.
Sexton is able to play both guard spots, which makes him more valuable. He is more of a scoring point guard at this stage as he is trying to convert into a full time PG, which in our opinion, will only help him in the future. 6’3″ point guards will always be in higher demand than shooting guards of his size at the professional levels.
When watching film of the Georgia native, we were very impressed with how Sexton plays the game. He seems to always be attacking the opposition while on offense. He is lethal in the open court, where he can use his superior speed and quickness to overwhelm opponents.
His ball-handling and play-making ability is simply outstanding and he likes to make the flashy pass. He reminds us of current Kentucky freshmen De’Aaron Fox in the way they play the game, although Fox is a little better athlete. This isn’t a knock on Sexton but more of a praise for Fox. He has the potential to be a very good on-ball defender and we are sure Avery Johnson will coach him up to become just that.
We consider him more of a scorer than a shooter at this point. His shooting will need to improve for the college level. We have seen instances where his shot selection can be questioned and he tends to play out of control. If he is going to make the move to being a full time PG, he will have to be able to slow him self down and get his teammates involved. Since he is a combo guard trying to transition into becoming a PG, Sexton sometimes is a ball-stopper, where he tries to go one-on-one to much. He will need to learn how to get his teammates more involved and is something he should concentrate on during his senior year.
Collin Sexton is a perfect example of a player who through hard work has made him into the player he is. He only became a starter at the high school level during his junior season, which is very rare for such a highly ranked prospect. His athletic ability as well as his scoring prowess will make him an instant impact player when he suits up for Alabama next year. In our opinion, it will be how well he makes the switch to becoming a full time PG that will determine his future NBA prospects, as he certainly has the talent to become an NBA player.
