#1 RANKED PLAYER IN THE COUNTRY (CLASS OF 2018)

WEIGHT: 190 POUNDS
POSITION: SMALL FORWARD/SHOOTING GUARD
HIGH SCHOOL: MONTVERDE ACADEMY IN FLORIDA
CHOSE DUKE OVER: OREGON, KENTUCKY, KANSAS, ARIZONA, AMONG DOZENS OF OTHERS
We were blown away after seeing R.J. Barrett in person live last season. There is nothing that he can’t do on the basketball court. The game looks like it comes easy for him. The Canadian born star re-classified into the class of 2018. He was the top ranked junior and instantly became the top ranked senior. Barrett will be suiting up for the Duke Blue Devils next season. Duke has landed the number 1,2, and 3 ranked players in the class of 2018. Barrett had his national coming out party this past summer. He scored 38 points against the USA team while playing for Canada. This was part of the FIBA U19 World Cup games.
Barrett can play both the SF/SG positions. We project him as a shooting guard for the college and NBA levels. He sports a 6-10 wingspan as he has the prototypical basketball body. The 17-year old has above average strength and phenomenal coordination. Of all the high school prospects we have covered the last 3 years, his all-around game is simply head and shoulders above the rest. The lefty shooting star is on his way to having a complete offensive game.
He can score from anywhere on the court. The SF/SG has a deadly mid-range game, which is really a lost art at all levels of basketball. He can stop on a dime and pull-up from anywhere as he has NBA 3-point range. His dribble drive game is already superb. Barrett has a really nice floater that he uses in the lane. His first-step is lethal which allows him to get to the basket anytime he wants to score or pass. Playing for national power Montverde Academy (FL), he is surrounded by other high-major division 1 players. This has only helped his game as he practices against other elite talent on a daily basis.
The high school phenom is a very unselfish player. He shows very natural ball-handling and passing skills. We believe he could handle playing point-forward if needed. Barrett has the uncanny ability to see plays before they unfold. Barrett is the most fundamentally sound player that we have ever scouted in the high school ranks. This is all coming from a player who should only be a high school junior. While the top ranked prospect is an offensive machine, his defense is right on par with his offense.
The McDonald’s All-American can conceivably guard 4 positions (1-4) on the court. We are impressed with his ability to anticipate passes. This leads to tipped passes and steals and allows him to get in transition where he is unstoppable. Using excellent lateral quickness, he stays in front of his man and doesn’t need any help. Barrett helps out in the rebounding department as he is a well-above average rebounder on both ends of the floor.
There aren’t many deficiencies in R.J. Barrett’s game. It is extremely rare to scout a player who seemingly has no holes where he needs vast improvement. Barrett will get the best college coaching at Duke. We compare the future Blue Devil to a former Duke star. Barrett reminds us of a young Grant Hill. They both could do it all on the court and make it look easy. If the high school star can come close to matching what Hill did, then we are looking at a future NBA All-Star and a possible NBA franchise type of a player. Players like R.J. Barrett don’t come around very often. We look for him to eventually become no less than a top 3 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.
