LOUIS KING 2018 HIGH SCHOOL SCOUTING REPORT
#22 RANKED PLAYER IN THE COUNTRY (CLASS OF 2018)
STAR RANKING: 5 STARS
WEIGHT: 195 POUNDS
POSITION: SMALL FORWARD
HIGH SCHOOL: HUDSON CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL IN NEW JERSEY
CHOSE OREGON OVER: SYRACUSE, MARYLAND, KANSAS, AMONG MANY OTHERS
We have seen Louis King play in person over 10 times in his high school career. The New Jersey native was just selected to participate in the prestigious McDonald’s All-American game in a few months. He is well deserving of that special honor. We have seen him mature as a player and person throughout the last 3 years, which included stops at a few different high schools. He was always talented, however he has grown into his body and has become a complete high school player this season. King has improved more in the last year than perhaps any of the other 5-star prospects in the class of 2018.
Louis King is a match-up nightmare. The Oregon commit has the perfect size for the small forward position. The 6’8″ star has excellent athleticism and runs the floor like a point guard. He has grown roughly 4 inches in the last few years. He can handle the ball and pass like a shooting guard as he kept those skills after his growth spurt. We love his versatility. While he most likely will play SF at Oregon, he could conceivably play 3 positions. Don’t be surprised if Oregon head coach Dana Altman utilizes him as a stretch 4 in some instances. His versatility helps him on the defensive end of the floor as well. King shows the ability to become a big-time defender who can guard the 2,3, and 4 positions. Players with this type of versatility on the court are invaluable.
The one area where we see the most improvement in the past year is in his shooting. King was usually known as a phenomenal slasher, where he can use his height and natural talents to score at the rim. However, we have been extremely impressed with his overall shooting, especially during the first month of this season. He can hit the mid-range jumper and now has range out to the 3-point line. The future Oregon Duck has become a reliable weapon out on the perimeter. He has repeated his shooting fundamentals, which is a testament to all the hard-work he has put into his game. King demonstrates a quick release on his shot and has smooth mechanics.
The SF has always been an above average rebounder. We expect that to translate to the college game. There aren’t too many players in the high school class of 2018 that combine Louis King’s natural physical gifts and skills. Once he gets in the weight room and becomes a little more consistent in his overall game then the sky is the limit. Not too many players combine his versatility, length, and height. We feel he is only scratching the surface of his abilities.
NOTE: King’s high school teammate, Jahvon Quinerly was also selected for this year’s McDonald’s All-American Game. Quinerly is a PG and a 5-star prospect who is uncommitted at this time.
