#4 RANKED PLAYER IN THE COUNTRY (CLASS OF 2017)
STAR RANKING: 5 STARS
WEIGHT: 190 POUNDS
POSITION: POINT GUARD
HIGH SCHOOL: IMG ACADEMY IN FLORIDA
CHOSE DUKE OVER: SETON HALL, ARIZONA, KANSAS, BAYLOR
PLAYER SUMMARY: The long recruiting process for the top high school point guard in the class of 2017 is over. Trevon Duval is headed to Duke. He will immediately take over for Frank Jackson, who left after his freshman year to enter the 2017 NBA Draft.
We are very familiar with Duval. Before finishing high school at IMG Academy, he was at Advanced Prep International in Texas for his junior year. Duval started his high school career at Saint Benedict’s in Newark, New Jersey. Being from NJ, we saw him play numerous times during his freshman and sophomore years.
It didn’t take long for us to realize how talented he is. Duval will be the best point guard at Duke since Kyrie Irving and most likely a one and done player. What makes the 6’3″ PG so special? It is a long list.
He has very good size for the PG position. He is the most explosive guard that we have evaluated since Dennis Smith Jr. 2 years ago. Duval isn’t just explosive. He already has a college ready body as he is very well built weighing around 190-195 pounds. In high school, he was unstoppable while attacking the rim. He sports the necessary strength to absorb contact or finish as well as elevate and throw down thunderous dunks.
There are a lot of excellent guards in the senior class of 2017. However, nobody is a better play-maker and passer than Duval. While he can score at virtually anytime, he is an unselfish player, just like a PG should be. He can make all the passes necessary and then some. Next season, he will have Grayson Allen manning the shooting guard position, which should make for a dynamic back-court. It will also give Duval the chance to play off the ball as well.
On the defensive end, he can lock up opposing guards as he has great lateral quickness. He has a demeanor about him in a way that he doesn’t want opposing guards scoring on him. Mike Krzyzewski will love having a lead guard who plays tough defense, which was somewhat lacking during the 2016-17 season.
While we are impressed with Duval in almost every aspect of his game, his shooting is a work in progress. His mechanics are smooth for the most part. He is going to need to consistently hit the mid-range jumper. If he can improve to the point where he is making 3-point shots at a respectable percentage, it will make his ability to penetrate that much more lethal. He is known as a very hard worker and we believe it is a matter of constant repetitions and hard-work for him to become a more consistent overall shooter.
Trevon Duval is a top 5 player in his class for a reason. He has all the ingredients to be a college star. We believe he is the 2nd best player in the country, right behind Michael Porter Jr. Duval will be handed the keys to the Blue Devil’s offense from day 1. While Frank Jackson had a solid freshman campaign this past season, Duval is simply a better player. If everything goes according to plan, we expect Duval to leave Duke after 1 season. He has everything needed to be a lottery pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. The future Blue Devil is simply a joy to watch on the basketball court who the Cameron Crazies will love.
