PLAYER SUMMARY: One of the biggest recruiting battles among unsigned top prospects is over. The winner for the services of 5-star recruit Trae Young is Oklahoma University. In what has been a down season for the Sooners, help will be on the way next year as the PG will look to help OU rebound from a disappointing 2016-17 season.

Young really boosted his stock this past summer on the AAU circuit. He had a phenomenal summer and played himself into the conversation on becoming one of the nation’s top point guards for the class of 2017.

The Oklahoma native is in the mold of a scoring PG. We were really impressed with his ability to score from anywhere on the floor. He has really nice shooting mechanics. His range goes beyond the college 3-point line. His exceptional ball-handling ability allows him to get into the lane virtually anytime he wants at the high school level.

While Young is a great scoring lead guard, he also possesses the qualities that are needed for a traditional PG. He shows great court awareness and gets his teammates the ball in the right spots where they can make plays. His vision and and basketball IQ are as good as any high school PG in america.

The future Sooner isn’t considered an elite athlete as his overall athletic ability is considered a little above average. He will need to put on weight/strength over the summer and before next season starts. Because he doesn’t posses elite speed or quickness, there is some concern about how he translates to big time division 1 basketball.

After watching him play, we are very confident that Young won’t have a problem adjusting to the college game. His high basketball IQ will make up for his lack of elite physical traits to a certain degree. He is just an excellent basketball player who can score and distribute the ball on point. We believe he will be just fine once he gains more strength.

Our overall opinion of Trae Young is very positive. He most likely will be handed the keys to the Sooners offense as a freshmen. He will bring great leadership skills and a very good all around game to Oklahoma. We see Young as being an excellent college point guard from the first game of his freshmen season until the end of his college career. He is exactly what the Sooners need.
