#31 RANKED PLAYER IN THE COUNTRY (CLASS OF 2017)
STAR RANKING: 4 STARS
WEIGHT: 185 POUNDS
POSITION: POINT GUARD
HIGH SCHOOL: HAMILTON HEIGHTS CHRISTIAN ACADEMY IN TENNESSEE (IS FROM CANADA)
CHOSE KENTUCKY OVER: FLORIDA, KANSAS, NC STATE, AMONG MANY OTHERS
PLAYER SUMMARY: Year after year, John Calipari goes out on the recruiting trail and lands the players that fit his system. In this case Calipari went out and conceivably landed one of the top point guards in the class of 2017.
Shai Gilgeous Alexander has the prototypical size for a point guard. While evaluating and watching Alexander, he looks like he is ready for immediate playing time. Kentucky also landed 5-star PG Quade Green. Because of Green, don’t be surprised to see Alexander playing the SG position at times as UK will have 2 talented players capable of handling the ball, which is important in Kentucky’s dribble-drive offense.
Alexander court vision and passing is what has stood out the most while evaluating him. The former Florida Gator commit is a shifty and craft ball handler who is adept at getting to the rim. He has a really quick first step. He uses a nice floater in the lane, which is difficult to block because of this size. This move will work well at the college level. Despite his thin frame, he can finish at the rim. However, he will need to put on weight and strength in order to do this on a consistent basis at the college level.
The 4-star recruit has the ability to become a premier defender in the SEC. He has the size, lateral quickness, and quick feet to be able to guard multiple positions, which will allow UK to be flexible in their defensive schemes. Alexander will need to get in the gym and work on his jump-shot. He shows solid shooing mechanics, however he is an inconsistent shooter at this stage. Once he gets a consistent jumper, he will be a more complete of a player.
There is a reason why Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is heading to one of the best college basketball programs in america. He is a really good basketball player who we believe is just scratching the surface of his abilities. We see him being a very good 2-way player for the Wildcats. Once he gets in the weight room and gains strength and his jump-shot improves, he will be a very productive player for Kentucky, probably sooner rather than later.
BELOW ARE HIGHLIGHTS OF SHAI GILGEOUS-ALEXANDER
What type of impact do you think Alexander will have as a freshman?
