#36 RANKED PLAYER IN THE COUNTRY (CLASS OF 2017)
STAR RANKING: 4 STARS
WEIGHT: 195 POUNDS
POSITION: POINT GUARD/SHOOTING GUARD
HIGH SCHOOL: PROLIFIC PREP HIGH SCHOOL IN CALIFORNIA
CHOSE XAVIER OVER: ILLINOIS, INDIANA, AMONG MANY OTHERS
PLAYER SUMMARY: Chris Mack has done an incredible job as head coach of Xavier. After another impressive 2016-17, Mack landed a player who will give the team needed back-court depth with talented but injured PG Edmond Sumner possibly leaving for the NBA.
Paul Scruggs has the talent to become the next great Musketeer guard. The 6’3″ Scruggs has the ability to play both guard spots, which will give Mack more options. Scruggs is an impressive looking athlete, who already has the look of a division 1 guard.
When evaluating the 4-star recruit, we were impressed with the physicality and aggressiveness that he plays with. He is an attacking guard who should get immediate playing time. His above average ball-handling and strength allows him to get to the basket almost anytime he wants at the high school level.
As previously mentioned, Scruggs is a combo guard. We believe in time that he can make the transition into a full-time point guard. He has the ball-handling, passing, and traits needed to become one. However, he will need to learn how to run an offense at the college level. This will take time.
Scruggs has solid shooting mechanics, however, needs to put in work on his mid and outside shooting. He will need to put in hard-work over the summer in order to improve his shooting. This will keep opposing defenders from playing off his ability to penetrate.
We really like the fit of Xavier and Scruggs. He fits the personality of a Chris Mack team. Scruggs is one of the toughest and best penetrating guards in the class of 2017. Once he improves his shooting, we look for Scruggs to become a very important player in Xavier’s rotation next season. He has a bright career in front of him.
