PLAYER SUMMARY:  The rich get richer. John Calipari went to national power, Findlay College Prep, to land one of the best power forwards in the class of 2017.

After evaluating P.J. Washington’s overall game, it is easy to see why he has been so highly coveted. The 6’8″ forward sports a huge 7’2″ wingspan, which will make up for being an inch or 2 short for the prototypical PF position. He is a lean and multi-skilled big-man who is unstoppable in transition at the high school level and a joy to watch.

We like Washington’s ability to hit the mid-range jump-shot with consistency. It is rare among high school big-men to have a player who can already hit the 12-15 footer. He also shows range out to the 3-point line, although he will need to become more consistent. He showed us the ability to attack the basket with ferocity. He dunks with authority. On the blocks, he uses a nice little jump-hook. We see Washington as a player who can play both inside and out, which will enhance his chances for immediate playing time, which he will get next year at Kentucky.

One of the main reasons why Washington is so highly touted is his ability to rebound. He is a fierce rebounder on both ends of the court. While he slightly undersized for the PF position, the ability to rebound usually translates to the next level. He shows great instincts and timing while rebounding. Washington will need to improve his ball-handling for the college level as he can get loose with the ball. We like his ability to pass for a big-man.

John Calipari will be getting a multi-dimensional player in P.J. Washington. The 5-star recruit is going to be a really good player for the Wildcats. He will bring an outside shooting presence for a big-man, which UK hasn’t had in a while. With the possibility of numerous Wildcats declaring for the 2017 NBA Draft, we look for Washington to get major playing time as a freshmen and perhaps be a starter. He has everything a player needs to become a college star.
