HIGH SCHOOL ELITES

MATT COLEMAN

#43 RANKED PLAYER IN THE COUNTRY (CLASS OF 2017)

STAR RANKING: 4 STARS

HEIGHT:  6’2”

WEIGHT: 175 POUNDS

POSITION: POINT GUARD

HIGH SCHOOL:  OAK HILL ACADEMY IN VIRGINIA

CHOSE TEXAS OVER: ARIZONA, DUKE, LOUISVILLE, AMONG OTHERS

PLAYER SUMMARY: Oak Hill Academy has been one of the best high school programs for the last 25 years. Every season, multiple division 1 players receive scholarships to high-major universities. Texas and head coach Shaka Smart ended up landing a player from Oak Hill who should have an immediate opportunity for playing time.

Matt Coleman is most likely the player who will be the Longhorns point guard for the next few seasons. The 6’2″ Coleman has the ability to play both guard spots, which will only enhance his value to Texas.

The 4-star recruit is one of the fastest players in high school basketball. He is a blur in the open court and thrives in the transition game. While not a pure PG at this stage, we believe he will improve enough to where he will end up at that position. He shows the ability to get into the lane and either finish or dish off to one of his highly skilled teammates. This is an area where Texas really struggled in this past season and Coleman will help out immediately in this area.

Coleman’s main strengths are his ball-handling and speed. We believe that he can turn into a very good on-ball defender as he has excellent lateral quickness. The lefty-shooting Coleman is going to need to improve his jump-shot in order to maximize his potential. He is an inconsistent shooter at this point in his development. He will need to to be able to knock down perimeter shots in order to prevent opposing defenses to play off his ability to attack the lane, which is one of his main strengths.

There is a lot to like about Matt Coleman. In our opinion, he will end up starting right away as a freshman. He plays the game the right way and will be and will be Shaka Smart’s coach on the floor. His abilities fits perfectly with Smart’s up-tempo, tough man-to-man style of play. Once he gains strength in the weight room and improves his decision making and shooting, Coleman is going to be a real nice player in the Big-12 conference.
