PLAYER SYNOPSIS:

Malik Monk is an extremely athletic shooting guard from the state of Arkansas. The brother of former Razorback wide receiver Marcus Monk averaged 27 points per game last season. Although Arkansas isn’t the best state for producing high end basketball talent, the 17-year old looks to squash that notion. He broke Arkansas head coach Mike Anderson’s heart by committing to the Kentucky Wildcats and John Calipari.

MALIK MONK WILL BE COACHED BY JOHN CALIPARI NEXT SEASON AT KENTUCKY

Judging by his numerous YouTube videos, Monk is an extremely confident, highly athletic athlete who plays well above the rim. He seems to be at his best in an up-tempo style where he can use his impressive speed and jumping ability (39-inch vertical leap). The 6’3″ All-American is very aggressive while attacking the rim and is known as a solid 3-point shooter. The knocks on him are that he needs to improve his ball-handling and decision-making.

After watching his videos, Monk is clearly a shooting guard. Some websites list him as a SG/PG but he seems to be at his best playing off the ball. He is a pure scorer, perhaps the best in the class of 2016. He is a very good defensive player with his athleticism which will carry over when he lands in Lexington, KY next fall. He is part of another top-notch recruiting class that includes 5-star prospects De’Aron Fox (PG) and “Bam” Adebayo (C).

Monk seems destined to have an immediate impact in college. He jumps out on tape when watching him. Going to a college and to a coach who knows how to develop players will only benefit him in the long run. John Calipari puts more players in the NBA then any other current college coach. If Monk can improve his 2 main weaknesses, ball-handling and decision-making, it will only improve his future as an NBA player. 6’3″ combo guards are more attractive and offer more versatility then 6’3″ shooting guards. One thing is certain. Whenever Malik Monk is on the court, he will be scoring.
