HIGH SCHOOL ELITES

LONNIE WALKER

#18 RANKED PLAYER IN THE COUNTRY (CLASS OF 2017)

STAR RANKING: 5 STARS

HEIGHT: 6’4”

WEIGHT: 195 POUNDS

POSITION: SHOOTING GUARD

HIGH SCHOOL: READING HIGH SCHOOL IN PENNSYLVANIA

CHOSE MIAMI (FL) OVER:  ARIZONA, KENTUCKY, VILLANOVA, SYRACUSE, AMONG OTHERS

PLAYER SUMMARY: Jim Larranaga has done a great job of landing top-notch talent at Miami. Last year he brought in top 30 recruits as Bruce Brown and Dewan Huell are producing as freshmen for the Hurricanes. Next year, it will be Lonnie Walker suiting up for the ACC school, who is fast becoming one of the better programs in the conference.

Walker has the looks and makings of a big-time college player. He plays the game with a sense of smoothness. As we were evaluating the shooting guard’s game, we were impressed with his wide array of offensive moves. He can score in multiple ways, which will benefit him tremendously at the college level. The 5-star recruit already looks like a college upperclassmen. He is very sturdy looking. We like the fact that he is aggressive on the offensive end while being unselfish at the same time.

He shows a very nice shooting stroke. With his above average ball-handling skills and strength for a SG, he is very hard to stop when attacking the rim. We saw him display a nice mid-range game and he shows the potential in time to become a reliable outside shooter. He is inconsistent right now with his 3-point shooting, however, due to solid shooting mechanics, he will improve with hard-work.

We put a lot of stock into players who play both ends of the court. That is what high school players will have to do in college. We see Walker as a potential excellent defender at the collegiate level. When watching film, he looks like he likes to play defense, which isn’t the case with everyone. With his strong frame, lateral quickness, and overall athletic ability, we believe he can become an excellent defender. This will only increase his value to Miami as well as his playing time.

The 2017 McDonald’s All-American is a very impressive looking player. While he needs to develop a more consistent outside shot as well as a few other things, he has a bright future ahead of him. He is an excellent overall scorer. We would like to see him improve in his decision making and continue to develop his ball-handling. However, he looks to us like an immediate starter for Larranaga and Miami.

Once he heads to college and the natural progression of improving as a player happens, Lonnie Walker is going to be a really good player. With Dewan Huell and Bruce Brown most likely returning to school, along with the addition of Walker, the Hurricanes will have an outstanding trio. Walker will be a big part of the future of Miami Hurricanes basketball.
