HIGH SCHOOL ELITES

JOHN PETTY

#25 RANKED PLAYER IN THE COUNTRY (CLASS OF 2017)

STAR RANKING:  5 STARS

HEIGHT: 6’6”

WEIGHT: 185 POUNDS

POSITION: SHOOTING GUARD

HIGH SCHOOL: JEMISON HIGH SCHOOL IN ALABAMA

CHOSE ALABAMA OVER:  KENTUCKY WAS THE OTHER FINALIST

PLAYER SUMMARY:  Avery Johnson has done a great job on the recruiting trail as he tries to rebuild the Crimson Tide. The former NBA veteran landed 5-star recruit Collin Sexton. Joining Sexton is perhaps his back-court mate next year in 5-star shooting guard John Petty.

Petty sports great size for the SG position. After evaluating his game, we came away impressed with his overall game. He can do multiple things on both ends of the court. He is a very good athlete who is just starting to tap into his potential.

He is very fluid in the transition game. We really like the way that Petty asserts himself on the offensive end. He is one of the more aggressive scoring guards that we have profiled. He attacks the basket and finishes very well. He has a nice shooting stroke with good mechanics, which should help him become a better shooter in the future. He has an array of scoring moves that he goes to.

His mid-range game is advanced for his age. While he has range out to the 3-point line, he is inconsistent. However, with repetitions, he should become an above-average long distance shooter because of his sound mechanics. He will need to improve upon his ball-handling and decision-making for the SEC Conference.

Defense is one aspect where some top prospects don’t give maximum effort in every game. This isn’t the case with the future Alabama player. He plays very hard on defense from what we have watched. Due to his size and length, we believe he will be able to guard multiple positions at the college level. He rebounds very well on both ends of the court and plays really hard.

We are surprised that Petty isn’t ranked higher. In our opinion, he is just as good or better than players who have a 5-star ranking. However, none of that will matter once the class of 2017 heads off to college next year. We see John Petty as an instant contributor. He will be playing with a very talented PG in Sexton along with other young players on the Alabama roster. We fully expect him to be a very good SEC player and one of the foundation players for the Crimson Tide program.
