PLAYER SYNOPSIS: As smooth a player as there is in the high school ranks. Tatum averaged just over 28 points per game as a junior at Chaminade Prep in St. Louis, MO. He was a part of a fierce recruiting battle with St. Louis, Duke, Kentucky and North Carolina. Duke and head coach Mike Krzyzewski won his services as Tatum committed this past July. Harry Giles, who happens to be a top 5 national recruit himself, is Tatum’s best friend and will be his future teammate at Duke.

Tatum played in the 2014 FIBA Under-17 World Championship and 2015 FIBA Under-19 World Championship. He also won his third gold medal with USA Basketball as the youngest member of the FIBA U19 World Championship team. The 6’8″ SF/SG is a very good athlete who displays excellent fluidity and can play above the rim both in transition and the half court. He is extremely agile and coordinated with great body control. When watching Tatum’s highlight videos it is hard to imagine him only being 17-years old.

The future Duke player comes from the same high school as current NBA players Bradley Beal (Washington Wizards) and David Lee (Boston Celtics). The knocks on Tatum are that he isn’t the most willing passer, plays too much 1-on-1 isolation, and isn’t very vocal while he is on he court. However, his positives far outweigh his negatives. He is near automatic from mid-range while shooting. The 17-year old uses a variety of spin moves and turnaround jump-shots (over either shoulder) to score.

NBA comparisons are all over the board when it comes to Jayson Tatum. Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, Penny Hardaway and Grant Hill are just 4 of the names. This author compares him current Sacramento Kings Small Forward Rudy Gay. Judging by body type and highlights, it seems like it would be a fairly accurate comparison to make. There is plenty of time for Tatum to improve his game and take it to another level. Tatum is a likely 1-and-done player and if he continues on the trajectory he is on now he will be a high 2017 NBA Draft Pick.

UPDATED NEWS: Tatum has been named the Gatorade National Player of the Year.
