#28 RANKED PLAYER IN THE COUNTRY (CLASS OF 2017)
STAR RANKING: 4 STARS
WEIGHT: 225 POUNDS
HIGH SCHOOL: EL DORADO HIGH SCHOOL IN ARKANSAS
CHOSE ARKANSAS OVER: FLORIDA, KANSAS, AMONG OTHERS
PLAYER SUMMARY: Mike Anderson has done a good job at Arkansas since taking over in 2011. The Razorbacks had a good showing in this year’s NCAA tournament. While they lose center Moses Kingsley, Anderson brought in his potential replacement in Daniel Gafford.
Gafford will get immediate playing time as a freshman with the loss of Kingsley to graduation. Defense is his calling card at this point in his development. The 4-star recruit is one of the top 5 rebounders and big-man defenders that we have profiled in the class of 2017. Gafford has excelled in high school at blocking shots and rebounding. These 2 attributes usually translate to the next level. He will be asked to be a defensive presence in the Razorback’s high up-tempo system.
In our opinion, Gafford is a perfect fit for Arkansas. He can run the floor very well for a player 6’10”. His athletic ability will help him close out on defenders. While playing stellar defense is what makes him such a highly touted prospect, his offensive game is a work in progress.
The Arkansas native will need to develop a few low-post moves. He scored a lot of points in high school by dunking and getting second chance put-backs. If he can do that and add a little face-up jumper to his game, it will make him more of a threat on the offensive end and a player opposing defenders will have to respect.
As previously mentioned, Gafford and Arkansas look like a great fit together. We believe he will have an impact as a freshman with his defense ability. In 2 years, Daniel Gafford has a chance to become one of he better big-man defenders in the SEC Conference. How well he develops on the offensive end will end up determining just how good of an overall player he can become. All the tools are there for the Arkansas coaches to work with.
