Welcome to our Free College Picks Against Spread. Today we will be analyzing and previewing a big rivalry match-up between Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s. At the end of the article we will be making our pick, which is always against the spread. Here is our 6th edition of “Free College Picks Against Spread”.

Gonzaga (17-2) vs St Mary’s (16-3)

Spread : Gonzaga -7.5

Time : 9pm (ET)

Venue: McCarthey Athletic Center

Two unbeaten teams in the West Coast Conference will tangle with first place on the line. Gonzaga swept St. Mary’s a year ago taking all 3 contests and will look to remain unbeaten at home. Gonzaga will look to snap St Mary’s 12 game win streak and add to their own 6 game win streak.

The Zags are the 4th highest scoring team in the country at (89.8ppg) thanks to a number of scoring options. So far this year they have dominated in league play (6 games) winning by an average of over 30ppg. Tonight they will have to go toe to to with their toughest challenger.

St Mary’s enters as the nations best shooting team at 52.4 FG%  including a 6-0 true road record. Jock Landale (6’11, Jr., Center) is a beast down low and has recorded a double double in 10 of his last 11 games averaging (21.7ppg/10.3rpg) on the season. Landale is an NBA prospect. The Gaels also feature junior point guard Emmett Naar who is 2nd in the nation in Assists per game with 9.4. Last Year the Gaels finished 29-5 and advanced to the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament before being ousted by Arizona.

Gonzaga has been able to win at least a share of the conference title in 16 of the last 17 seasons. However it was the Gaels who earned 9 of 10 pre-season first place votes to capture it this year. Tonight home court should give the Zags the clear advantage but expect the Gaels to rise to the occasion and make this a game that goes down to the wire.

St. Mary’s and Coach Randy Bennet are always a tough well coached squad. They have a strong shot to make a deep run this year in the tournament. Nice job highlighting this mid-major program.

    1. Hi,
I completely agree with you that Randy Bennett is a very good coach. He is actually underrated in my pinion. He has an excellent winning percentage. He is doing all of this with non elite talent. His teams are always a very cohesive unit that plays team basketball. This years team might be their most talented and are a sleeper for the NCAA tournament.
