THE BIG EAST IS AMONG THE TOP CONFERENCES THIS SEASON
Many people thought when the Big East was raided a few years ago that the conference would take a huge step backwards. Syracuse and Pittsburgh were 2 of the main defections. However, the Big East has asserted itself pretty well. Villanova, Xavier, and Providence have all been ranked in the top 10 at points during the season. Seton Hall has a chance to make the NCAA Tournament and are on the bubble right now.
Villanova is in a spot to get a #1 one national seed when Selection Sunday rolls around. This is a very big tournament for Villanova. They have been knocked out of the NCAA’s early the last couple of years and will need production from its front-court if they are going to advance to the Final Four.
Providence, led by All-American PG Kris Dunn have a chance to make some noise. Guard play is huge during tournament time and the Friars have the best one in america. Xavier, led by Head Coach Chris Mack is a tough, veteran team and have had recent success in March. It looks like the Big East isn’t going anywhere in the future and will continue to be a very good basketball conference.
HOW DO YOU THINK THE BIG EAST WILL FARE DURING THE NCAA TOURNAMENT?
WILL KENTUCKY BE AN EARLY NCAA EXIT?
Kentucky has struggled this season. One of the main reasons is the inconsistent play of Freshmen Skal Labissierre. Rated among the top 5 prospects entering college basketball this season, the freshmen has struggled so much that Head Coach John Calipari has admittedly said he hasn’t utilized Labissiere correctly. If Kentucky is going to make it through the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament and make the Sweet 16, the highly-touted freshmen must make his presence known on the court and at least provide interior defense. Superb PG Tyler Ulis and freshmen guards Jamal Murray and Isaiah Briscoe are a very talented trio and never count out Head Coach John Calipari in March. However, the front-court and especially Labssierre need to produce.
If there are any major recruiting news that takes place during the week, you will find it on this page.
RAWLE ALKINS TOOK A RECRUITING VISIT TO SAINT JOHN’S THIS PAST WEEKEND
Alkins is one of the top unsigned prospects left in the 2016 class. The New York born star is a must get for Saint John’s and new Head Coach Chris Mullin. The number 9th ranked prospect in the class of 2016 according to rivals.com would provide instant star credibility to a program that desperately needs it. DeANDRE AYTON also visited Saint John’s this past weekend. The Arizona native and number 4 ranked prospect in the 2017 class according to rivals.com accompanied Alkins on the trip to Saint John’s. Ayton is a 6’11” Center with a tremendous upside and would be another huge recruiting get for head coach Chris Mullin as he tries to rebuild the Johnnies.
UDOKA AZUBUIKE COMMITS TO KANSAS
The number 27th ranked prospect in the class of 2016 according to rivals.com committed to the Kansas Jayhawks. With Perry Ellis leaving after this season, the PF has a chance to step right into the rotation next year for head coach Bill Self and the Jayhawks.
JOSH JACKSON VISITED KANSAS THIS PAST WEEKEND
The number 1 ranked player in the class of 2016 according to rivals.com took in the Kansas/Kentucky game this past Saturday. The 6’7″ guard out of California would probably give Kansas the number 1 recruiting class in the country if he were to sign with the Jayhawks. Other teams in the running for Jackson’s services include Arizona, N.C. State, Louisville, and Maryland. However, never count out Kentucky when it comes to recruiting elite level players. Maybe Jackson is keeping an eye on the Wildcats as well.
