COLLEGE: NOTRE DAME
WEIGHT: 200 POUNDS
POSITION: SMALL FORWARD
PROJECTED DRAFT POSITION: LATE FIRST TO MIDDLE OF 2ND ROUND
PLAYER SUMMARY: Beachem has been the team leader for the Fighting Irish this season and is one of the top 5 seniors in college basketball this season, in our opinion. The 21-year old has improved through his entire career, which is a testament to him as well as head coach Mike Brey and Notre Dame’s coaching staff.
The Indiana native has very good size for the SF position. He is a better athlete than he is given for. While not an elite one, he is more than capable of guarding the better wing players in college. He has very long arms and once he gains more weight, he should develop into a solid/good NBA wing defender.
After watching the senior throughout his entire collegiate career, it is his shooting that stands out the most. We consider him one of the better pure shooters in college. He has has very smooth shooting stroke with a very quick release, which makes it very difficult for opposing defenders to block or halt. Beachem shows the ability to score by coming off screens a lot of the time and has a nice pull-up jump-shot.
The senior will need to improve his ball-handling for the next level. While he is an excellent shooter, he has trouble getting his own shot, which will be a problem at the next level. His passing is average from what we have seen. Beachem has a very solid IQ, which Mike Brey’s players always seem to have. What he lacks in certain aspects of his game, his overall basketball IQ can make up for it in college. He seems to always make the correct and smart decisions while on the court. Will this be the case at the NBA level? Time will tell on that.
We like the defensive potential of the 6’8″, 200 pound SF. He has the attributes that NBA personnel look for in a wing defender. He has the size and length that are prototypical for the NBA. However, we believe that Beachem needs to get stronger for the next level.
Our overall thoughts on Beachem is that he has the talent to be a solid role player on an NBA team. We think he can eventually be a solid “3 and D” player. NBA teams are always looking for players who can score and he can definitely do that. He also shows the potential to be a solid defender. As he gets stronger and improves his weaknesses, we can see V.J. Beachem coming off the bench for an NBA team and doing what he does best, which is showing off that beautiful shooting stroke and providing some instant offense in spurts.
