POSITION: SMALL FORWARD/POWER FORWARD
PROJECTED DRAFT POSITION: LATE FIRST/EARLY SECOND ROUND
PLAYER SUMMARY: Semi Ojeleye was a former top high school recruit who committed to Duke. After not seeing much playing time early in his career, he transferred to SMU. After playing at an All-ACC conference level the past few seasons, it looks like he made the right decision. The junior is a major reason why SMU basketball has turned the corner.
Ojeleye was one of the more exciting players to watch in college basketball this past season. Ojeleye is a tweener at 6’7″. NBA scouts aren’t sure which position he will play at the next level. What we do know after evaluating him is that he has some skills that can translate and play in the NBA.
He is a really explosive player. He can score in multiple ways and is very efficient around the basket. He has shown to be a really good rebounder at the college level, which usually translates to the NBA game. Ojeleye has a motor that doesn’t stop. He runs the floor exceptionally well. He has the makings of becoming a player who can defend multiple positions.
His main weakness is his outside shooting. This is what has NBA scouts a little worried. Can he shoot it well enough to become a small forward? Right now the answer is no. However, he can do everything else on the basketball court.
We like Semi Ojelye’s game. In today’s NBA, you need a player like Ojeleye on your team. While his best position might be PF, he can defend and rebound. If he ever develops a consistent jump-shot, he just might become an NBA starter. The worst case scenario is that he becomes a very good role player who brings that motor to the floor every night and helps an NBA team out in a variety of ways.
