2017 NBA DRAFT PROSPECTS

RODIONS KURUCS

COLLEGE: NO COLLEGE- PLAYING IN BARCELONA (FROM LATVIA)

HEIGHT: 6’8″

WEIGHT: 200 POUNDS

POSITION: SMALL FORWARD

CLASS:  NO CLASS- DOESN’T ATTEND COLLEGE  (19-YEARS OLD)

PROJECTED DRAFT POSITION:    MIDDLE TO PICK 25 OF FIRST ROUND

PLAYER SUMMARY:  Kurucs is perhaps the best international player who will be in the 2017 NBA Draft. He is currently playing professionally in Barcelona as he is getting experience playing against grown men.

The 6’8″ small forward has prototypical size for the position. If he played division 1 basketball in the states, we believe he would have a major impact. The 19-year old’s main strength lies in his ability to put the ball in the basket. He has shown us the ability to score in a multitude of ways.

Kurocs can attack the basket and finish through contact, which is impressive as he is playing against much older players. He can hit the mid-range jumper with consistency and shows range out to the 3-point line. He will need to keep improving on his consistency from long-range.

The Latvia native is a solid athlete. He won’t blow you away with his athletic ability or natural gifts. However, he knows how to play the game the right way and has a high basketball IQ. While evaluating the teenager, we were very impressed with his passing ability for a player his size. He showed us the ability to make the correct plays when needed and is very good while in transition. We can possibly see him play a little Point/Forward in a few years as his passing, ball-handling, and high IQ make him a good candidate for that role.

A concern of ours is that Kurucs might have trouble guarding the premier athletes at the small forward position. He doesn’t sport the elite lateral quickness needed to cover the top small forwards at the NBA level. We can see him struggle in this area in his first few years in the NBA. Another concern is he doesn’t receive a lot of playing time for his professional team. Will this hurt his development?

Rodians Kurucs is a tantalizing player. He has skills that will translate to the NBA level. We believe in 3-4 years he can be a good rotational player in the NBA. A question we have “is he ready for the NBA?” To us, he might be a draft and stash overseas player, or even D-League for 1-2 years. Kurucs needs to just play. Playing in the D-league for a while and getting plenty of playing time will really help him. It will also help him adjust to America. He has the talent for the NBA, it just needs to be refined. He would only be a freshmen or sophomore if he played college basketball. If the NBA team that drafts him is patient with him, he just might turn out to be a real find.
