WEIGHT: 215 POUNDS
POSITION: SMALL FORWARD/POWER FORWARD
PROJECTED DRAFT POSITION: LATE TEENS TO LATE FIRST ROUND
PLAYER SUMMARY: 3 years ago, an unheralded recruit that Hoosiers coach Tom Crean recruited exploded onto the national scene and became a 1st team All-American. That player was Victor Oladipo, who was the 2nd overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft and is now with the Oklahoma City Thunder. It looks like Crean has hit it big again as he has a player who is one of the most improved players in college basketball.
OG Anunoby was a lightly recruited player who was born in London and attended high school in Missouri. He wasn’t ranked among the top 150 high school recruits as a senior by almost every recruiting service, making him a real diamond in the rough. Just like Oladipo however, both players improved tremendously from 1 year to the next. Crean deserves a lot of credit for this.
After watching the sophomore perform multiple times this season, we have come away very impressed. Anunoby is a 6’8″ small forward who has a monstrous 7’6 wingspan. With his length and athletic ability, we believe he can be a premier defender not only in college, but in the NBA someday. He shows the ability to guard multiple positions on the court, which only enhances his value.
Still only 19-years old, he is just growing into his body. While already being an excellent defender, there is more to his game. We see consistent improvement in his overall shooting, starting from the end of last season up until the present. He can hit the 15-17 jumper, although he needs to work on his 3-point shot. He is known for rim rattling dunks, where he shows off his elite athleticism.
He needs to work on his ball-handling and passing ability. He will need to show improvement in these 2 areas as the season continues as he is now on every NBA scouts radar. We have seen instances where he tries to do too much on the floor, instead of letting the game come to him. He is still very young and should learn this in time.
What intrigues us about Anunoby is his ability to play both SF/PF. As his body continues to fill out and his skills keep improving, we can see a scenario where he is a “stretch-4” at the NBA level. We believe this is where his god-given athletic ability and improving skills will put him in the best situation to succeed. The NBA is trending towards having PF’s that can stretch the floor, and in a few years this is probably his best position.
OG Anunoby is a player who with hard work can develop into an excellent NBA player. 19-year old’s with 7’6 wingspans and elite athleticism don’t grow on trees. He is a perfect example of a player being overlooked in high school and give Tom Crean and his coaching staff credit for landing and developing him. The Hoosiers have big plans this season as they are very good. Anunoby is still a couple years away from being the player that we think he can be, which is a really good NBA player.
The NBA team that drafts him should be patient with him and let him develop. The potential to be an elite NBA defender and excellent “stretch-4” or SF is there.
