2017 NBA DRAFT PROSPECTS (LUKE KENNARD)

2017 NBA DRAFT PROSPECTS

LUKE KENNARD

COLLEGE: DUKE

HEIGHT: 6’5″

WEIGHT: 185 POUNDS

POSITION: SHOOTING GUARD

CLASS: SOPHOMORE

PROJECTED DRAFT POSITION:             LATE TEENS TO MID 20’S

PLAYER SUMMARY: While the highly touted freshman for Duke get most of the publicity, Luke Kennard has arguably been the Blue Devil’s most consistent and best player all year long. The sophomore has proven to be more than just an excellent shooter. His play has demanded the attention of NBA scouts.

The 6’5″ shooting guard is arguably one of the top 5 shooters in college basketball. The lefty shooting Kennard sports a beautiful shooting stroke. He has very good mechanics and a very quick release on his shot. He is deadly from 3-point range and is around a 90% free-throw shooter. His ability to shoot and put the ball in the basket will be his ticket to the NBA.

As a freshmen in 2015-16, Kennard was mostly a spot-up shooter. This year, we have seen his offensive game expand. His improved ball-handling has allowed him to take defenders off the dribble as he is attacking the basket much more frequently this year. He is phenomenal at moving without the ball and coming off screens, which Duke uses a lot.

What stands out to us besides his shooting is his basketball IQ. When watching the Blue Devil’s play, it seems that Kennard is always in the right spot and making the correct play. His IQ on the court is excellent, which helps him make up for his lack of elite athleticism. We have seen him improve his passing this year as he is very unselfish. He plays each possession like it is his last.

The shooting guard isn’t a great athlete, which might hurt him come draft night. We can see him having difficulty defending NBA players. His overall physical tools are a little above average, in our opinion. However, as previously mentioned, his basketball IQ can make up for his physical deficiencies to a certain degree.

The NBA team that drafts Luke Kennard will know exactly what they are buying. They will be getting a lights out shooter and a player who plays extremely hard. Shooting is always in high demand for NBA organizations. Some NBA teams will overlook a player’s physical limitations if they have a real good NBA skill. For Kennard, that skill is shooting and the ability to put the ball in the basket.
