COLLEGE: VILLANOVA UNIVERSITY
WEIGHT: 215 POUNDS
POSITION: SHOOTING GUARD
PROJECTED DRAFT POSITION: EARLY TO MIDDLE SECOND ROUND/ CHANCE TO RISE
PLAYER SUMMARY: Hart led Villanova to the national title in 2016. He was projected as a late first round to early second round pick this time last year. He decided to return to college and produced like the first team all-American that he is.
We are very big fans of Hart’s overall game. He can do everything on the basketball floor. He just doesn’t do 1 thing at an elite level, which is why he will probably be a second round pick.
Quite simply, Josh Hart is a winner. We would be shocked if he didn’t make an NBA roster next season. He has all the ingredients that an NBA coach would want in a player. We see him being an effective rotational player for a long time. Can he have a Malcolm Brogdon type of rookie season? That would depend on what team selects him.
Whoever gets Josh Hart is getting a very good basketball player who will help the team on the floor and be a positive clubhouse influence.
BELOW IS OUR 2016 NBA PLAYER PROFILE ON JOSH HART
PLAYER SUMMARY: Villanova was an excellent team this past season. Heading into the NCAA tournament, however few expected the Wildcats to accomplish what they did. Head Coach Jay Wright’s team shocked the country by winning the national championship on junior forward Kris Jenkins’ buzzer beating 3-pointer against North Carolina. While Jenkins was the hero in the championship game, Josh Hart was Villanova’s best player all season long and in our opinion, one of the more underrated players in America.
Hart is a junior who has declared for the 2016 NBA Draft and it looks like he will stay in it. He is a very solid perimeter shooter who has improved mightily since stepping foot on Villanova’s campus. He has shown the ability to knock down clutch shots at big moments of games and he wants the ball in those situations. He is not afraid of failure and loves the spotlight.
Hart does everything well on the basketball court, however he does nothing at an elite level. This might hurt him come NBA Draft time as he doesn’t have one particular skill that would be considered top-notch. The 20-year old shooting guard has been one of the best 2 way players in college basketball the past 2 seasons. He is a very solid ball-handler as the Wildcats employ a 3 guard rotation the majority of the time. Hart is an outstanding individual defender and is a very good rebounder for his position.
We really like Hart’s awareness on the court. He has a high basketball IQ and always seems to make the right and smart decisions while on the court. In other words he is a player who coaches would love to have on their team. At 6’5″ Hart has good but not prototypical size for the SG position at the NBA level. He has a strong body and is an above average athlete, although not an elite one.
We have a couple of questions about Hart’s NBA potential. 1. Does he have a high upside? 2. Can he possibly play the PG position so that he can be a combo guard PG/SG? If Hart can prove to NBA general managers and scouts in individual workouts that he can be a combo guard he might be selected higher than his projected draft slot as of now (middle to end of second round).
We have followed Villanova and Josh Hart closely the past few seasons. We really like Josh Hart and what he brings to a basketball team. As previously mentioned he does everything well on the basketball court, just nothing at an elite level. With that being said he is a tremendous competitor and has the ability to make an NBA team and be a solid role player. There are spots in the NBA for a player like Josh Hart. He has the ability in time to be a very good role player for an NBA franchise.
