PROJECTED DRAFT POSITION: MID TO LATE SECOND ROUND
PLAYER SUMMARY: Jonah Bolden played at UCLA for a few seasons before deciding to leave the program and play professionally in Serbia. The 6’10” forward is entering the 2017 NBA draft and has a good shot at getting selected. He has played very well in Serbia.
Bolden was a hard evaluation since he is playing overseas. From what we have seen of the former Bruin, he shows a few attributes and skills that can translate into the NBA game. Bolden is an explosive player. He has the size and length that NBA teams covet.
He has become a real good offensive player while playing professionally. He can step out and hit the mid-range jumper. He also has the ability to hit the 3-point shot. We feel his best position will be at the “stretch-4” position, in which he can use his size and athletic ability to get an advantage over slower power forwards.
Bolden’s defensive versatility might be the main reason that he will most likely get drafted. He can guard small and power forwards. He displays good lateral quickness for a big-man. He has shown the ability in Serbia to create for himself and is a solid ball-handler. Time will tell if his ability to create will translate against premier athletes in the NBA.
At this point in his development, Bolden doesn’t possess much of a low-post game. He will need to get in the weight room and get stronger as he only weighs around 230 pounds. It will be important that he doesn’t lose too much athleticism as he gains weight.
Jonah Bolden is an intriguing prospect. He already has professional and college experience, which should help him. We believe that in a few years he can perhaps be a rotational player in the NBA, perhaps even more. We wouldn’t be surprised if he ended up in the NBA D-League for a while to refine his skills and get stronger. His skill-set fits today’s NBA game and he can be a nice future bargain pick in the second round as NBA scouts tend to look for upside when selecting players after picks 40-45.
