COLLEGE: NO COLLEGE- CURRENTLY PLAYING IN GERMANY
WEIGHT: 235 POUNDS
POSITION: POWER FORWARD
CLASS: DOESN’T ATTEND COLLEGE
PROJECTED DRAFT POSITION: LATE LOTTERY TO 20
PLAYER SUMMARY: Hartenstein is an 18-year old currently playing in Germany. He is considered by many to be the best prospect to come out of there in years, possibly since future Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki. When you watch him play, you will see why he is so highly regarded among NBA personnel.
After evaluating the big-man’s game, we thoroughly believe that if he played division 1 basketball in the U.S., he would be among the top players in the country. We love his frame as he has the size that the NBA looks for in a PF. Standing a legitimate 6’11”, he looks to have the frame to add another 20 pounds on his 235 pound body.
Hartenstein is a very good athlete who often plays above the rim. While evaluating his film, we came away very impressed with his overall offensive skill-set. He shows the unique ability for a player his size to put the ball on the floor and create for himself and others as he has very good court vision and passing ability. These are 2 skills that are very hard to find in 6’11” players and the teenager already has it.
The knock on Hartenstein the past few years was his shooting. He has come along way as he possesses a very nice shooting touch and has range out to the 3-point line. The ability to become a very good shooter is there, as in our opinion, he just needs repetitions and game experience. Remember, he would only be a college freshmen if he was in the U.S. as he is currently playing against grown men in the German League.
Rebounding on both ends of the court is currently one of his biggest strengths. He is relentless in his pursuit of the ball. He seems to always be in the right place when he needs to be. For a young player, he shows a real nice feel for the game, which we like.
While there are so many things to like about his game, as is the case with young players, he is still inconsistent in some areas. As previously said, his jump-shot and overall shooting need to become more consistent. He needs to develop a go to low-post move. Despite having very good court vision and passing ability, he tends to make sloppy decisions with the ball in his hands. However, all these negatives can be turned into positives as he gets older and continues his natural progression.
If Isaiah Hartenstein was in the 2016 NBA Draft, chances are he would have been a top 5-7 pick. The 2017 NBA Draft is going to be much better and deeper. If an NBA team is looking for a high upside PF who is only going to be 19 when his rookie year begins, Hartenstein is your selection. We believe his ceiling is as high as any other PF/C that will be in the June draft. Just be patient with him and the payoff for his future NBA team will possibly be huge.
