PLAYER SUMMARY: Last year’s NBA Draft had a bunch of international players get selected as basketball is truly becoming a world-wide sport. While the 2017 NBA Draft doesn’t look like it will have as many talented international prospects in it, there are a few that look to be high draft picks. Frank Ntilikina is the most talented one and has the talent to hear his name be called very early come the June draft.

Since Ntilikina is currently playing in France he was a hard player to evaluate since we only had the chance to watch clips of his game. We know that he is held in very high regard as many NBA personnel believe he might be the best international player to make his way to the United States and the NBA since Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. When watching him play, you can see why he is held in such high regard. In a draft that looks to be one of the best in terms of point guard talent in years, the 18-year old, who was born in Belgium fits right into that category. In our opinion, if he played high school basketball in the U.S., he would undoubtedly be a 5-star prospect.

He shows excellent ball-handling and passing ability. He looks like he see the entire court very well as he gets his teammates very good looks. Like most young and talented point guards, he is great in transition, which often ends in him dunking or getting an easy assist. He has the ability to get to the rim basically at will at this stage in his development due to a quick first step. Opposing defenders have virtually no chance of playing him one on one. Is this because of the level of competition he is playing against, or because he is just that good? We believe it is a combination of both as he isn’t playing against elite competition .

Ntilikina has a nice little floater in the lane, which we believe he should try and perfect because it will be really hard to block due to his size. The mid-range shooting seems to be above-average and he has 3-point range. We see inconsistent shooting mechanics when evaluating him on film. His shooting stroke will need to become more consistent and we have faith that it will. Remember, this is an 18-year old.

Although he is known for his offensive repertoire, his defensive potential and current ability really excites us. With his huge wingspan (7 feet) for a PG, and height, we can envision him being a lock-down defender in the future.

While his shooting needs to become more consistent as he looks to make the jump to the NBA next season, our biggest concern with Ntilikina is his weight. He is rail thin and we believe that he needs to put on at least 15 pounds if his future NBA employer expects to give him significant minutes next year. In our minds his body just simply isn’t ready to handle the NBA. If he was playing Division 1 basketball this year, his weight would be a problem as well, although his enormous talent would make up for that.

After fully evaluating Frank Ntilikina, we can see why NBA personnel are so high on him. He has been compared by many analysts to Dennis Schroeder of the Atlanta Hawks. We personally would compare him to Dante Exum of the Utah Jazz, who himself was an international player and a lottery pick a few years ago.

We love the upside and potential of Ntilikina, however, we don’t think he is ready to handle the rigors of an NBA schedule or the physicality of the game. He is 2-3 years away from playing meaningful minutes. With that being said, he is one of the better players in a very talented 2017 NBA Draft. Whichever team that selects him will need to be patient. That might be hard as he has lottery (top 13) type talent. Once he grows into his body and improves his shooting, the chance to be a very good NBA player is high. We recommend that his future NBA team have patience with him and don’t rush his development.
