2017 NBA DRAFT PROSPECTS

DONOVAN MITCHELL

COLLEGE: LOUISVILLE

HEIGHT:  6’3″

WEIGHT: 210 POUNDS

POSITION: SHOOTING GUARD

CLASS: SOPHOMORE

PROJECTED DRAFT POSITION:    LATE FIRST TO EARLY SECOND ROUND

PLAYER SUMMARY: Rick Pitino is a master at getting his players to perform to their capabilities. One clear example of a player improving from one year to the next is Donovan Mitchell.

The former highly sought after recruit improved a lot in his sophomore year and was the best player on a talented Louisville team. Mitchell is a very bouncy, 6’3″ shooting guard. He has shown the ability to play PG and we believe he might end up being a combo guard in the NBA. However, he will need to improve on his PG skills in order for that to happen.

There are a lot of things to like about Mitchell. There is a lot of versatility that he displays. He can defend, score, run the team in spurts, and make big plays when the need arises. He has shown us this season that he has improved his shooting. He has always had the ability to attack the basket since he has the necessary strength and skills to do so.

However, we have been impressed with how he has become a more well-rounded player. His passing, rebounding, and decision-making have all improved consistently throughout the season.

While Mitchell is excellent at getting into the lane, in our opinion, there are 2 areas where Mitchell will need to improve upon in order to elevate his draft standing. One area is how consistent he can eventually be as an outside shooter that will determine where he gets drafted. We believe he will improve his outside shooting. He shows good shooting mechanics. We believe it is just a matter of repetitions. He is deadly at getting into the lane so he will need to keep defenses honest by hitting outside shots.

The second area is what position will he play in the NBA? He is undersized for the SG position. However, he has NBA level athleticism, which will help negate his lack of prototypical size to a point. If Mitchell can turn into a solid PG who improves at running a team then his stock will go up.

We eventually see Donovan Mitchell as a solid rotational player in a few years. He should be able to help a team out at both guard spots, which will only enhance his value. Mitchell is a really good basketball player. While we would like for him to return to college for his junior season, he probably won’t. If he did, he would have a good chance of being a high first round pick in 2018.
