WEIGHT: 195 POUNDS
POSITION: POINT GUARD/ SHOOTING GUARD
PROJECTED DRAFT POSITION: EARLY-SECOND ROUND/ RISING UP DRAFT BOARDS
PLAYER SUMMARY: While Colorado isn’t a nationally known program, Derrick White has proven to be a bonafide NBA prospect. The senior combo guard had an excellent season for the Buffaloes.
White has a solid all-around basketball game. We like his size for the PG position. He also displays the ability to play off the ball, which increases his worth and versatility to an NBA team. He is an above average athlete, although not an elite one. White can score and score in bunches as he was needed to do that in college.
What impresses us about the 6’4″ guard is his play-making ability. He has a smooth handle and can make all the passes look easy. He has a high basketball IQ and it shows up on tape. White always seems to be in the right place at the right time.
What NBA scouts like about White is his overall shooting ability for a PG. He can pull up on a dime and shoot. He can score without the ball in his hands, as he moves very well and knows how to get open. He has long distance range and smooth shooting mechanics. White also displays the ability to post up smaller guards, which is rare of college point guards.
The Colorado star can improve his rebounding for his position. While we love his ability to put the ball in the basket, he will need to improve his shot selection. He was forced to do everything last season, so we are confident he can improve in this area. Adding another 10 pounds to his body would be a big benefit to him, in our opinion. He was a very good defensive player at Colorado. He led the team in blocked shots for a good portion of the season. We believe he can guard PG’s and SG’s.
Derrick White is a player who is rising up NBA Draft boards with 3 weeks to go before the draft. The more we watch and evaluate him, the more we like him. Once thought to be a late 2nd round pick, we believe he can get selected in the early second round, even late first. He has a professional body and skills. If he can handle playing PG on a full-time basis, he has a chance to be a real sleeper in the draft. In time, White should turn into a very efficient NBA back-up point guard.
