2015-2016 STATISTICS: 15.7PTS, 3.2REB, 1.7AST
PROJECTED DRAFT POSITION: 2ND ROUND
NBA DRAFT COMPARISON: LATRELL SPREWELL
PLAYER SUMMARY: McClellan was thinking about entering the 2015 NBA Draft but eventually decided against it. It was a very smart move for the former Texas transfer as he is now the senior leader for a very good Hurricanes team that has a chance to make some noise in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
The 22-year old is one of the best athletes in the ACC Conference. He sports a 44-inch vertically leap, which shows as he often plays above the rim. His athletic ability allows him to thrive in transition. The SG is an above average shooter at this stage in his development and has the ability to create his own shot, which is very important at the NBA level. He is a solid passer and a good rebounder for his position. He is clearly the go to guy for Miami and will be counted on heavily during the NCAA Tournament.
McClellan needs to become a more consistent player. For his talent, he has had a few too many off-games in certain areas. He is a streaky shooter and can become a better passer. While a good defensive player, I believe he relies too much on natural athletic ability and not enough on fundamentals. I have seen him be beaten by less athletic/talented players when watching Miami play.
With this being said, Sheldon McClellan has a chance to be a solid NBA player. His college coach, Jim Larranaga raves about him and believes he should be a first-round draft pick. While I do not believe he is a first round talent, he has an opportunity to be an early 2nd round pick with a chance to be a very good backup SG who can play in the NBA for a number of years.
