NBA DRAFT COMPARISON: AMARE STOUDEMIRE/ THE CURRENT VERSION
PLAYER SUMMARY: A native of Cameroon, Siakam was outstanding this season for New Mexico State. He isn’t well known nationally, however NBA scouts have taken notice and is now being mentioned as a possible late first round pick in the 2016 NBA Draft.
Siakam red-shirted when he first came onto campus and it looks to have been a wise decision. He is very well built for the PF position and has excellent athleticism. He is one of the better players in an average WAC conference and was a first team selection this season. However, he is talented enough to play for any team in the country.
Siakam is one of the more athletic PF’s that will be in this years draft. He plays above the rim and is an excellent rebounder on both ends of the floor as he averaged a double-double this season. Siakam is excellent in transition as he can use his speed and athletic ability to beat opposing PF’s down the floor. He is also a solid shot-blocker, which is usually a skill that translates to the NBA.
Even with the excellent stats that he produced this past season, Siakam is relatively new to the game of basketball. The Cameroon native started playing the game late, which shows he is just scratching the surface of his potential. He will need to improve on his poor free throw shooting. It is crucial that the 22 year old sophomore develops a mid-range jump shot as well as a few more offensive moves. When watching game footage he scores a lot of his points on dunks and second chance rebounds. At the NBA level it is harder to rely on just athletic ability alone.
We believe Pascal Siakam is just starting to tap into his potential. He certainly has the physical traits to play in the NBA. His rebounding ability will translate to the next level. The key for future NBA success will be his ability to improve his overall shooting ability and to develop a go to offensive move. If the team that selects Siakam can be patient with him, they just might have a solid NBA rotational player on their hands.
