PLAYER SUMMARY: Murray came to Kentucky by way of Canada. He re-classified and graduated high school a year early. At a solid 6’4″ and over 200 pounds Murray is an extremely smart player and has an excellent array of offensive moves. He is playing off the ball at Kentucky but has point guard skills. A very good 3-point shooter, the freshmen can also create his own shot given his size.
Murray isn’t considered a dynamic athlete, which might hurt him when NBA General Managers evaluate him. However, when watching Kentucky play this season he has stood out for the Wildcats along with diminutive point guard Tyler Ullis. He burst onto the high school national stage when he was named the MVP at the 2015 Nike Hoop Summit. Playing for the World team he dominated against the best players the USA team had to offer.
The big question when evaluating Murray is what position is he going to play in the NBA. If he can’t handle playing point guard his stock will slip. If he can show he can handle playing point guard he has the opportunity to rise up the board. With Tyler Ullis and freshmen Isaiah Briscoe being the primary ball-handlers for Kentucky, Murray hasn’t had to be the lead guard. His workouts prior to the upcoming NBA Draft are going to be vital. He needs to show he has the natural point guard skills that are needed to perform in the NBA. If he can show this to at least one NBA General Manager, Jamal Murray will hear his named called within the top 13 picks.
