UPDATE: IVAN RABB WILL RETURN TO CAL FOR HIS SOPHOMORE YEAR (2016-17)
PLAYER SUMMARY: Rabb is a 6’10” athletic Power Forward who has steadily climbed his way up draft boards this winter. He is one half of Cal’s dynamic freshmen duo, along with Jaylen Brown. Despite his 220 pound frame he is an outstanding rebounder as he boasts an impressive 7-1 wingspan. He has a nice little touch around the basket and is a good passer for a big man. He only weighs 220 pounds now but has the frame to add weight with the potential to be an imposing presence in 3-4 years.
Despite possessing a nice touch around the basket, Rabb is very raw offensively. Put-backs and dunks make up the most of his current offensive game. The 18-year old is to left-handed dominant and needs to work on his right hand. As most young big men he is a poor free-throw shooter. Rabb currently doesn’t possess enough lower body strength when his back is to the basket. He often gets pushed around by college players who are a lot less talented.
My opinion on Rabb is that he is very much a boom or bust player. He has the potential in 5 years to be the next Chris Bosh. He also has the potential to be the next Noah Vonleh, who was a top 10 pick a few years ago and has not lived up to that billing. It is imperative that he gets on a serious weight-training program. Rabb needs to also clearly improve his offensive arsenal. He will need to add a nice 12-15 jumper and a back to the basket move. If Rabb declares for the 2016 NBA draft he will need to show these skills off for general managers. He has rocketed up the draft boards and is seen as a possible top 5-10 pick. I am just not clearly as sold on him as are many others.
