PLAYER SUMMARY: The last name Sabonis is synonymous with Lithuania basketball. Domantis’ father is Arvydas Sabonis, who was a phenomenal player in Europe and the NBA. Arvydas is widely regarded as one of the best big-men passers to ever lace up the sneakers. His son just so happens to be a very good player in his own right.

Gonzaga Head Coach Mark Few recruits international players very well and has on his hands a future NBA PF/C in the 19-year old. Since Gonzaga plays on the West Coast and their games go into the early hours of the morning, I have only seen Sabonis play 3 times this year. However, I have watched a lot of tape on him and really like him as a player.

Domantas Sabonis is a very strong and skilled low-post player with excellent rebounding skills. Sabonis is sneaky quick, as he has the ability to drive to the hoop and convert, without possessing great speed or athletic ability. Like most international players, he is a very smart player who knows how to play the game. The lefty has a nice little jump-hook with both hands and plays with a mean streak, which I think is a very valuable asset for him.

Sabonis is just an average athlete, which may hurt his stock come draft day. He would be better off with an NBA team that plays in the half-court as he can be beaten down the floor by faster and more athletic players. This may hurt him in the NBA. Improving his jump-shot is a must as it will keep defenses honest.

What you see with Domantas Sabonis is what you are going to get. I believe he will never be a star, however he will play in the league for a long time. Teams can always use a 6’10” player who is tough, rugged and won’t back down. In my opinion he will be a very good rotational player who in time might be an eventual starter in the NBA. He will be a solid big-man in the NBA. NBA teams can always use a player like Domantas Sabonis on their roster.
