PLAYER SUMMARY: Stone has really come on as of late and has given Maryland an inside presence that will help them come NCAA Tournament time. The number 6 overall prospect in the 2015 class according to rivals.com scored a Maryland freshmen record 39 points in a win over Penn State on December 30, 2015.
Stone has a refined low-post game with really impressive footwork. He has range out to 15 feet and by losing weight and getting into better shape now has the ability to out-hustle opposing centers down the court. The 18-year old sports impressive hands as he catches any pass thrown his way. He is a good shot-blocker and rebounder at this stage of his career. His play in the last month gives Maryland a legit option down-low and will make things easier for star Melo Trimble and the Terrapins stable of guards.
Stone is only an average or slightly above average athlete. He needs to keep working on his body and keep getting stronger for once he heads off to the NBA. I have been really impressed with Stone the last month of the season. I have watched Maryland play a lot and each game it seems he keeps getting better and better. I have seen his body change throughout the season as well as he has lost some of the baby fat and has become leaner.
My opinion of Stone is that he is as polished a big-man as there is in the country. Only a freshmen who won’t turn 19 until February 2016, he has the potential to rise up the draft boards. Centers with his overall game don’t last very long come draft night. While not considered an elite athlete, I don’t think that will hinder him all that much. He is a legit low-post scorer and defender who knows how to play. If he continues his rapid improvement he can make the difference and take Maryland to the Final 4 and perhaps the National Championship. This will only help him in the eyes of NBA General Managers. He is only scratching the surface of his potential and in 4-5 years has the chance to be an excellent NBA player.
