NBA DRAFT COMPARISON: KENT BAZEMORE
PLAYER SUMMARY: Bembry is a throwback player that is strong in all areas. He showed great leadership skills carrying St. Joseph’s on his back into the second round of the NCAA tournament this year, ultimately losing to Oregon in a tightly contested battle. His excellent college career is highlighted by being selected as the 2016 A-10 Player of the Year. He was also named to this year’s A-10 1st Team and A-10 Defensive All-Defensive Team. Bembry was also named to the 2015 A-10 1st Team.
Bembry scored 20 points, 10 times this year. He had his season high of 30 points in a win against VCU in the conference championship game. On 2/28 in a win against the St. Louis Billikens, he went for 27 points and also collected 8 rebounds and 6 assists. His best statistical performance of the season, was in a 2/17 win against the Dayton Flyers. In this contest, Bembry had 16 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.
The 6’6″ 21-year old is somewhat undersized to play small forward in the NBA. His best chance to stick in the league will be to develop into a perimeter defensive stopper. He will also need to improve his three point shooting percentage. On a selfish note, I would have preferred for him to stay in college for his senior season. However, I do understand that his draft stock would probably not have increased. I felt that Bembry was one of the best Big 5 players that I have seen in the last decade. His gritty style will be missed, as he was able to almost single handedly will St. Joe’s back into the tournament.
