COLLEGE: UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA
WEIGHT: 214 POUNDS
AGE: 22 years old
POSITION: SHOOTING GUARD
2015-2016 STATISTICS: 26.6PTS, 5.6REB, 2.4AST
PROJECTED DRAFT POSITION: LATE LOTTERY
NBA DRAFT COMPARISON: A better version of Jodie Meeks/ A bigger version of Ben Gordon
PLAYER SUMMARY: Hield has been a superstar so far this season as he has led the Oklahoma Sooners to as high as the 2nd ranked team in the country. Perhaps no upperclassmen has improved his NBA draft stock as much as the 6’4″ shooting guard who grew up in the Bahamas. Perhaps one of the top 3 pure scorers in college, Hield is averaging 26.6PTS, 5.6REB, and 2.4AST a game for a team with legitimate Final 4 aspirations.
Already blessed with a pro body, he is a very smooth athlete with good jumping ability. A Big-12 First Team selection in 2014-2015, Hield is on his way to First Team All-American status this year and is a serious National Player of the Year candidate. He put on a show against #1 Kansas on January 4, 2016 by pouring in 46 points in a triple overtime loss. The Senior is strictly a shooting guard as he doesn’t have the ball-handling ability to play Point Guard in the NBA. He is also a tad on the short side to play shooting guard, however his strong frame and long wing-span makes up for some of his deficiencies.
The 22 year-old is a good creator as he can out-muscle smaller defenders and is a solid defender. He needs to improve his mid-range game as he can rely on the 3-point shot a little too much, although to his defense Oklahoma plays an uptempo style in which players are inclined to shoot the 3. The NBA team that drafts him will be looking for him to do what he does best. Score the basketball. If you haven’t seen him play this year you should. A very exciting college player and if he can improve his ball-handling Buddy Hield might sneak his way into the 2016 NBA Draft lottery.
