MICHAEL GBINIJE

COLLEGE: SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY

HEIGHT: 6’7”

WEIGHT: 200 POUNDS

AGE: 23 YEARS OLD

POSITION: SHOOTING GUARD/SMALL FORWARD

CLASS: SENIOR

2015-2016 STATISTICS: 17.5PTS, 4.1REB, 4.5AST

PROJECTED DRAFT POSITION: MID SECOND ROUND

NBA DRAFT COMPARISON:  TERRANCE WILLIAMS/ FORMER LOUISVILLE STAR AND FORMER FIRST ROUND PICK

PLAYER SUMMARY: Gbinije is the senior leader for a young, but talented Orange team. He has improved his game this year and is now one of the better players in the ACC Conference. He transferred from Duke after his freshmen season. Duke’s loss has certainly been Syracuse’s gain.

The Senior has nice size for the SG/SF position and has even seen time at the PG spot. It is his versatility that has in my mind increased his NBA value. He shows very good ball-handling ability for a player his size. He is a good 3-point shooter as Jim Boeheim’s teams love to shoot the 3. What I really like about Gbinije is his ability to handle the ball, passing, and driving to the basket. His ball-handling skills for a player his size is what allows him to be such an effective player, as his overall statistics indicate.

His athleticism allows him to thrive in transition and on defense. With his size he is able to guard multiple positions. In my opinion, his defense might be his best attribute. Being able to guard multiple positions is highly coveted attribute for NBA teams.

A concern for NBA teams is that Gbinije is already 23-years old who will turn 24 before the 2016 NBA Draft this June. A concern I have as I’m sure NBA GM’s do is if he is a finished product. “Has he maxed out all his talents?” Multiple players who will be selected in the upcoming draft are only 18, 19, and 20 years old so they aren’t close to reaching their potential.

Gbinije will need to get stronger as he only weighs 200 pound on his 6’7″ frame. What you see with MIchael Gbinije is what you are going to get. As mentioned above he is a very talented college player. I also believe Gbinije is one of the more underrated players that will be available in the upcoming NBA Draft. Even if he has “maxed out his talents”, he can clearly play in the NBA. His ability to handle the ball at his size as well as being able to defend multiple positions will make many NBA front offices take a liking to him. I believe he can make a very solid rotational player in the NBA who can use his versatility on both ends of the court to help an NBA team.
