NBA DRAFT COMPARISON:  JEREMY LAMB

PLAYER SUMMARY: Richardson had a very solid freshmen season who really stood out during the NCAA tournament when he put together some very good performances. The New Jersey native and former McDonald’s All-American has put his name into the draft but has not hired an agent meaning he can go back to college. May 25th is the day college players have to decide whether to return to school or enter the draft.

Being from New Jersey, I have watched Richardson’s career closely. I had seen him play numerous times in high school as he was teammates with current Syracuse PF Tyler Roberson. They won the New Jersey state championship in 2013 while teammates at Roselle Catholic (NJ) High School. The team they beat in the state final was Saint Joseph’s (Metuchen,NJ) High School. On that Saint Joseph’s team was Karl Anthony-Towns, the number 1 pick in the 2015 NBA Draft and Wade Baldwin, the current Vanderbilt PG who is entering the 2016 NBA Draft.

The first thing that jumps out when watching Richardson play is his sweet shooting-stroke. He has one of the most pure shooting-strokes that you will find on any level of basketball. The 20-year old has the capability to get hot in a hurry as the Elite 8 game against Virginia is proof of that. He scored 23 points as the Orange won that game to go to the Final 4. Standing a legit 6’6″ he has the size that NBA general managers look for in a shooting guard. While currently on the lean side at around 200 pounds his body looks like it will be able to gain weight and strength. Once his body completely fills out he will have the prototypical SG look.

He is aggressive when attacking the rim and can use either hand when he is trying to score. The freshmen is also an aggressive defender from what I have seen from him this year. However, it is hard to get a good gauge on his overall defensive ability since Jim Boeheim’s Syracuse teams play almost exclusively a 2-3 zone. He will have his opportunity to showcase his defense during the NBA Draft combine in which he should be invited to as well as in individual workouts with NBA teams in the weeks leading up to the 2016 NBA Draft in June.

Richardson is currently a weak ball-handler who goes to his right hand the majority of the time. He will need to improve his ball-handling for the next level. NBA defenders will play him aggressively if he doesn’t improve this skill. He is an above-average athlete but not an elite one and is a solid passer.

Malachi Richardson is a player who has a lot of upside in his game. In our previous NBA Mock Draft we didn’t have him on it. The reason was we weren’t sure he would stay in the draft but all indications now point in the direction of him staying in the draft. He has a very good chance of being a first round selection. He isn’t a finished product by any means, however in 3-4 years he might turn out to be a steal for an NBA team that drafts him anywhere from the low 20’s to the end of the first round. He has a lot of natural ability and once he grows into his body he can be a real nice NBA player.
